A nagy Woody Allen menet

Nyilvánvaló, hogy magasabb geometriai tudás nélkül senki nem boldogul Woody Allen szerelmi sokszögeivel, különösen, ha ezek egyik csúcsa egy város. Manhattan ez alkalommal egyenesen főszereplő. Az operatőr, Gordon Willis új nyelvet talált ki: a film – Allen életében először – szélesvásznú és fekete-fehér. A szélesebb képben többet látunk a városból. A színek hiánya pedig a művészfotókhoz teszi hasonlatossá a város képét. Woody Allen hősei már eddigi filmjeiben is hangot adtak azon nézetüknek, hogy New Yorkban élni nem választás kérdése, hiszen máshol nem is lehet. Ezt rögtön a film elején tisztázza a mostani történet hőse, Isaac Davis, az író, aki éppen egy regény első fejezetével küzd.

A Manhattan sok tekintetben az Annie Hall folytatása. Nem a történeté, hanem a gondolaté. Woody Allen azonban ez alkalommal visszafogja hősét. Isaac messze nem annyira szellemes és mindentudó, mint Alvy Singer. Sőt! A forgatókönyv egy olyan nővel, Maryvel (Diane Keaton) hozza össze, aki szellemesebb, akinek fel van vágva a nyelve. És ami különösen megérintő ebben a filmben: tétova és különféle analitikusokon edződött szereplői tele vannak érzelmekkel. És nem könnyen boldogulnak velük. Rendkívül izgalmas a széles vászon használata is. Míg a szűkebb kép jól együtt tartotta a szereplőket, a nagy tágasság lehetőséget kínál arra, hogy a fájdalmas jelenetekben elmászkáljanak, kicsámborogjanak a képből. Meglepő módon ettől minden egy kicsit drámaibbá válik. (Sebaj, majd Gershwin zenéje átsegít rajta.) A Manhattan Woody Allen szép, érzelmes elmélkedése a szerelem nevű tudatmódosult állapotról. És kevéssé emlékeztet napjaink romantikus komédiáira, amelyek kezdete, vége, tétje maga a Szerelem. Itt inkább azon rágódhatunk, hogy a szerelem, a szakítás, a megcsalás, a kibékülés és társai egy nagyobb játszma – az Élet – összetevői.

Obviously, without greater geometric knowledge, no one can cope with Woody Allen’s love polygons, especially when one of their apexes is a city. This time Manhattan is right at the centre. Cinematographer Gordon Willis invented a new language: for the first time in Allen’s life, the film is wide-screen and in black and white. The wider picture shows more of the city. And the lack of colour makes the city look like artists’ photographs. Woody Allen’s heroes have already expressed the view in his previous films that living in New York is not a matter of choice, because there is nowhere else to live. This is made clear right at the beginning of the movie by the hero of this story, Isaac Davis, a writer who is struggling with the first chapter of a novel.

Manhattan is in many ways a continuation of Annie Hall. Not of the story, but of the idea. Woody Allen, however, restrains his hero this time. Isaac is nowhere near as witty and omniscient as Alvy Singer. And what’s more! The script brings him together with a woman, Mary (Diane Keaton), who is wittier, who has a sharper tongue. And what is particularly touching about this film is that its hesitant characters, trained on various analytics, are full of emotion. And it’s not easy for them to cope. The use of a wide screen is also extremely exciting. While the narrower screen kept the characters together, the wide open space allows them to creep in and out of the picture during painful scenes. Surprisingly, this makes everything a little more dramatic. (Don’t worry, Gershwin’s music helps you through.) Manhattan is Woody Allen’s beautiful, emotional meditation on the altered state of consciousness called love. And it bears little resemblance to the romantic comedies of our time, whose beginning, end and stakes are love itself. Instead, we can consider that love, break-ups, betrayals, reunions and so on are all part of a larger game – life.

A Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar hangversenye a mítoszokba enged némi betekintést. Az első részben egy modern mítosz kultikus zenéjét hallhatják, mely rengeteget merít a hangverseny második részében felcsendülő szerzők, így Wagner, Mahler és Holst zenéjéből, ugyanakkor egy ősi mitikus történet modern feldolgozása.

Az előadás második részében Velekei László koreográfiájával a Győri Balett az Istenek játéka című táncjátákot mutatja be, mely szintén a mítoszokból táplálkozik. Lényegében azt a gondolatot járja körül, miszerint a lét végességét nem ismerő istenségek számára az élet csupán egy valóságos tét nélküli játék. Bár hibáik, erényeik és jellemük nagyon is emberi, harcaikra, szerelmeikre és viszályaikra nem vetül a végesség, a visszafordíthatatlanság árnyéka. Talán ezért sem érinti meg őket a halandók tragédiákkal teli világa, mindez számukra csupán járulékos veszteség. A halandókra legtöbbször ügyet sem vetve élik szeszélyes életüket a halhatatlanság kényelmében, és így teremtik meg a földi élet zűrzavarát, traumáit, kataklizmáit és szépségeit is. De ne feledjük: az isteneket az ember képzelete teremtette. Az ő létezésük a mi magyarázatunk a világ létezésére. Így, amikor ők távolodnak el tőlünk, vajon nem mi szakadunk-e el a teremtés lényegétől? Vajon nem azért teremtettük őket halhatatlannak, hogy megőrizzenek számunkra egy fontos szeletet abból a világból, amelyet értéknek tartottunk?

This concert by the Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra offers some insight into the world of myths. The first part kicks off with the cult music of a modern myth, which draws a great deal from the composers appearing in the second part of the concert, Wagner, Mahler and Holst, while remaining at the same time, a modern interpretation of an ancient mythical story.

In the second part of the evening, the Ballet Company of Győr presents a dance drama titled Game of the Gods. Also based on myths, this work choreographed by László Velekei centres on the idea that for deities unexposed to the finite nature of existence, life is merely a game with no real stakes. Although their faults, virtues and characters are very human, no shadow of finiteness or irreversibility is cast on their fights, loves and quarrels. Perhaps this is why the tragedy-laden world of mortals does not affect them either: for them, it is merely a matter of collateral damage. For the most part, they live their capricious lives in the comfort of immortality, ignoring us mortals and instead creating the confusion, traumas, cataclysms and beauties of life on earth. But let us not forget that the gods were the product of man’s imagination. They exist in order to explain the existence of the world. Therefore, when they leave us, does this not mean that we ourselves are breaking away from the essence of creation? Was it not in order to preserve for us an important slice of the world we considered valuable that we made them immortal?

A Bohemian Betyars már jó ideje az egyik legnépszerűbb magyar zenekar, sőt, nemzetközileg is komoly sikereket ér el energikus, felvillanyozó koncertjeivel. Speed-folknak vagy freak-punknak is hívott stílusukban ott a punkos lendület, a skás szökellés, keserédes érzelmek, balkáni és cigány turbófolk, de most olyan koncertre készülnek, amilyet még nem adtak. A borsodi fiúk visszanyúlnak zenéjük autentikus gyökereihez, és újragondolt hangszereléssel, extra hangszerekkel és a Parno Graszt vendégeskedésével lépnek színpadra.

A 2009 óta működő Bohemian Betyars koncertjeinek közvetlen, ösztönből áradó, életigenlő hangulata felszabadítja a közönséget, az ember zsigereibe hatol és minden lábat táncra bír. Hitelesen képviselik a hazai keserédes létszemléletet, de a zenekart talán az teszi a legkülönlegesebbé, hogy ez az életérzés teljesen autentikusan árad zenéjükből, mivel a kezdeti időkben igazi csavargók módjára, utcazenélve járták be Európát. Mára a hazai és európai klubok és fesztiválok visszatérő vendégei, de turnéztak már Kínában, Dél-Koreában, Japánban és az Egyesült Államokban. Most azonban másra készülnek, alapvető hatásaik, a magyar népzene, a tradicionális cigányzene és a balkáni, fúvósokban dús folk kimeríthetetlen tárházán keresztül szeretnék bemutatni nem szokványos műsorukat, és újragondolt, áthangszerelt dalaikat. A hatfős zenekar a koncert során kiegészül további fúvósokkal, vonósokkal és a Parno Graszt zenekar tagjaival. A Betyárvilág minden szegletét bejárják – úgy, ahogyan még nem hallhattuk tőlük sem!

The Bohemian Betyars have long been one of the most popular bands in Hungary, and have also enjoyed major international success thanks to their electric and energetic concerts. They play Balkan and Gypsy turbo-folk that features speed-folk and freak-punk styles and encompasses a punk energy, a ska skip and bittersweet emotions. Now, however, they are preparing for an entirely new kind of concert. The Borsod boys are taking their music back to its authentic roots, with reconceptualised instrumentation, extra instruments and special guests Parno Graszt taking the stage.

The concerts of the Bohemian Betyars, who have been performing since 2009, have an intimate, wholly instinctive and life-affirming feel that liberates the audience, gets into your guts and has everybody in the house up and dancing. They are faithful representatives of the bittersweet existence of their homeland, though perhaps the group’s most unique quality is the lust for life that flows in utterly authentic way from their music – no surprise given that they have travelled Europe playing street music in a bona fide vagabond style since the very start. Today, they are frequent guests at clubs and festivals across Hungary and Europe, while they have also toured China, South Korea, Japan and the United States. Now, however, they have another plan as, through an inexhaustible exploration of their fundamental influences, Hungarian folk music, traditional Gypsy music and Balkan, wind instrument-rich folk music, they seek to present an extraordinary show and reconceptualised and reorchestrated songs. Over the course of the concert, the six-member group will be joined by wind musicians, string musicians and members of the Parno Graszt group. We will tour every corner of the Betyar world as they play a concert like no other!

A karácsonyi orgonakoncertek a Müpa legszebb hagyományait képviselik. Az ünnep közeledtével mindenki vágyik a zene nyújtotta nyugalomra és átszellemültségre – és mi adhat teljesebb békét, mint az orgonamuzsika, az a repertoár, amelyet alkotói egy eredendően liturgikus hangszerre komponáltak? Az sem véletlen, hogy a Müpa orgonakoncertjeinek része az a cappella kóruszene, hiszen a kíséret nélküli emberi hang a tisztaságot szimbolizálja. És persze az orgona és a kórus ezeken a koncerteken együtt is megszólal – ahogyan az Mészáros Zsolt Máté és a Valkai Dávid vezette Szegedi Bartók Béla Női Kar hangversenyén is történik.

Mészáros Zsolt Máté Junior Prima-díjas orgonaművész és Liszt-kutató egyike a legsikeresebb magyar orgonaművészeknek, a Budapest-Belvárosi Nagyboldogasszony Főplébánia-templom zeneigazgatója. 2018-ban szerezte meg kitüntetéses orgonaművész diplomáját a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetemen. A Szegedi Bartók Béla Nőikar az 1967-ben alakult Bartók Béla Kórus utódaként jött létre 2006-ban, Ordasi Péter vezetésével. Jelenlegi karigazgatója, Valkai Dávid 2018 őszén vette át az énekkar irányítását. Az orgonaművész és a kórus közös koncertjének műsora rendkívül gazdag: a közönség hallhat szóló orgonaműveket Bach, Liszt, Csajkovszkij, Vierne, Karg-Elert, Antalffy-Zsiross Dezső és Jonathan Scott műhelyéből, megszólalnak az 1870-es években született ukrán szerző, Mikola Dmitrovics Leontovics, a kortárs amerikai komponista, Joan Szymko, valamint a 20. századi magyar kórusirodalom jelesei, Kocsár Miklós és Karai József darabjai. Hallunk orgonakíséretes kórustételeket Adam, Franck és Poulenc terméséből – sőt Mészáros Zsolt Máté egy opusa is helyet kapott a színes programban.

The Christmas organ concerts represent the finest traditions of Müpa Budapest. As the festive season approaches, everyone longs for the tranquillity and serenity of music – and what could be more peaceful than organ music, a repertoire composed for an instrument that is inherently liturgical? It is also no coincidence that a cappella choral music is part of Müpa Budapest’s organ recitals, as the unaccompanied human voice is the perfect symbol of purity. And, of course, these concerts showcase the sound of the organ and the choir together – as is the case at the concert of the Béla Bartók Female Choir of Szeged, led by Dávid Valkai, and Zsolt Máté Mészáros.

Zsolt Máté Mészáros, Junior Prima Prize-winning organist and Liszt researcher, is one of Hungary’s most successful organists. He is also the music director of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as Budapest’s Inner City Parish Church. He graduated from the Liszt Academy with honours as an organist in 2018. The Béla Bartók Female Choir of Szeged was founded in 2006 and led by Péter Ordasi, as the successor of the Béla Bartók Choir, which was established in 1967. Its current choir master, Dávid Valkai, took over in autumn 2018. The joint concert of the organist and the choir has an extremely rich programme: featuring solo organ pieces by Bach, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Vierne, Karg-Elert, Dezső Antalffy-Zsiross and Jonathan Scott, as well as works by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych, born in the 1870s, the contemporary American composer Joan Szymko, and pieces by Miklós Kocsár and József Karai, greats of 20th century Hungarian choral literature. The audience will be treated to choral works with organ accompaniment by Adam, Franck and Poulenc – and even an opus by Zsolt Máté Mészáros.

A Rio de Janeiró-i születésű Flavia Coelho brazil gyökereit és népe zenei stílusait, a szambát, a bossa novát, a forró vagy éppen a modernebb baile funkot keresztezi karibi hatásokkal, reggae-vel és ragamuffinnal. A nomád énekesnő Párizsban talált otthonra, karrierje is onnan indult, de 2011-es debütálása után, további három albummal a háta mögött a világot is bejárta – Budapestre is állandó producerével, Victor Vagh-gal érkezik. Sound systemük napfényes zenét szór, roots reggae-től cumbián át elektronikus hangzásokig.

Flavia Coelho bohém családba született, édesanyja kabarék sminkese és fodrásza volt, édesapja népzenét gyűjtött Brazília észak-keleti részén, nem csoda, hogy tizennégy évesen már ő is tagja lett egy utazó varietétársulatnak, aztán a riói favelákból eljutott Európába, ahol Párizs lett újjászületésének helyszíne. Gyerekként az otthonról hozott brazil hatások mellett a jamaicai zene nyűgözte le, olyannyira, hogy életművét is a két világ összeházasításának szentelte, nála a szamba reggae-vel találkozik, a bossa nova ragamuffinnal, mint első lemezének címe is egyértelműsíti: Bossa Muffin. Dalaiban a vidámság, a napfény uralkodik, de legutóbbi, negyedik nagylemezén, a 2019-es DNA-n nemcsak lelkét énekli ki, hanem gyökereit is feltárja, a brazil valóságot az annak részét alkotó korrupcióval, homofóbiával és rasszizmussal. A Tony Allen afrobeat-dobossal és Cheikh Lô énekessel is dolgozó – hangulatában Manu Chao világával rokon életművet építő – énekesnő 2024-re ígéri új albumát, mostani turnéján pedig a karibi sound systemeket idézi meg. Fellépésén eredeti riddimekre, remixekre és előző három lemezéről származó klasszikusokra hozza mozgásba önmagát és közönségét.

Flavia Coelho, who was born in Rio de Janeiro, combines her Brazilian roots and folk music styles, samba, bossa nova and hot or more modern baile funk with Caribbean influences, reggae and ragamuffin. The nomadic singer found a home in Paris. Her career began in the city, though after her 2011 debut and with a further three albums under her belt, she has also explored the world, and now arrives in Budapest together with Victor Vagh, her full-time producer. Their sound system blasts out sunshine music that features everything from roots reggae and cumbria to electronic sounds.

Flavia Coelho was born into a bohemian family. Her mother was a cabaret make-up artist and hairdresser, while her father collected folk music in the North-East part of Brazil, so it’s no surprise that at the age of 14, Flavia also became a member of a travelling variety company. Later, she travelled from the Rio favelas to Europe, where Paris became the venue for her rebirth. As a child, in addition to the Brazilian influences of her homeland, Coelho was also captivated by Jamaican music – to the extent that she has dedicated her career to bringing the two worlds together. With Coelho, samba and reggae, bossa nova and ragamuffin collide, as indicated by the title of her first record: Bossa Muffin. In her songs, happiness and sunlight reign, though on her fourth and most recent full-length record, the 2019 DNA, she not only sings her soul out, but also reveals both her roots and the Brazilian reality, encompassing corruption, homophobia and racism. The singer – whose work is similar in mood to the world of Manu Chao, and who has also worked alongside afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and singer Cheikh Lô – has promised a new album for 2024, while her current tour pays tribute to Caribbean sound systems. At the concert, she will get herself and the audience moving through riddims, remixes and classic tracks from her previous three records.

A Magyar Állami Népi Együttes a szenteste napját, a karácsony vigíliáját, a várakozás örömét, izgalmát, csodáját bemutató produkciója valóságos, a népi hagyományból eredő játékokból, szokásokból, a kis Jézus születését üdvözlő keresztény tradícióból, valamint az e naphoz köthető mesés, csodás történetekből épül fel. A nézők az advent utolsó napjának kora hajnaltól késő estig zajló örömteli pillanatait élhetik át a hótündérek hajnali hóvarázslásától, a hóemberek titkos találkozóján és a karácsonyi mézillatú, mágikus ételek elkészítésén át egészen a karácsonyfa-állítás és -díszítés meghitt ceremóniájáig. A megbokrosodott szánhúzó lovak, a fergeteges hógolyócsaták, párválasztó korcsolyatáncok a humort sem nélkülözve készítik elő a karácsonyi ünnepkör egyik legnépszerűbb misztériumjátékát, a betlehemezést, amely az előadás végére összegyűjti a mesés utazás valamennyi résztvevőjét, hogy együtt élhessék át Isten fia megtestesülésének, a Megváltó világra jöttének őszinte örömét. A Magyar Állami Népi Együttes hét képben megfogalmazott adventi táncjátéka (Karácsony hajnala; Téli játékok; Hóember-találkozó; Száncsengő; Süssünk, süssünk valamit; Betlehemesek; Szép karácsony) igazi ünnepi hangulatot teremt, közel hozza a karácsony titkát, felidézi a várakozás gyermeki örömét. Az előadásban részlet hangzik el Szabó T. Anna Hóhullásban című verséből, Michael Praetorius Terpsichore, musarum aoniarum quinta című gyűjteményének 21-es számú tételéből, a Suite de Gran Ballet-ból, valamint elhangzik Gárdonyi Géza Fel nagy örömre! című verse is. Az előadás a Müpa és a Hagyományok Háza – Magyar Állami Népi Együttes együttműködése keretében jött létre.

The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble’s exciting premiere production presents Christmas Eve, the Christmas vigil and the joy and excitement of waiting, the games and traditions of folk origins and the Christian tradition of welcoming the birth of Jesus, as well as the fairytale-like, magical stories which have developed around this day. The audience will have the chance to live through the joyful moments of the last day of advent, from early morning to late evening, from the magical creation of snow by the fairies at dawn to the secret meeting of the snowmen, the preparation of magical honey-scented Christmas foods and the ceremony of setting up and decorating the Christmas tree. With no little humour, the emboldened horses pulling a sleigh, the fierce snowball battles and the paired ice dancers make up the Nativity procession, one of the most popular mystery plays of the Christmas period, where all participants in this magical journey come together at the end of the performance to experience sincere joy together at the arrival of the Redeemer, the incarnation of the Son of God. The Advent dance performance of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble (Christmas Dawn; Winter Games; Snowman Meeting; Sled Bell; Let’s Bake, Bake Something; Christmas Carollers; Beautiful Christmas) creates a true holiday feeling close to the mystery of Christmas that evokes a child’s joy in the anticipation of the holiday. Also being featured are an excerpt of Anna Szabó T.’s poem Hóhullás (Snowfall), Michael Praetorius’s Suite de Gran Ballet, the 21st piece from his collection Terpsichore, musarum aoniarum quinta, along with Géza Gárdonyi’s poem Fel nagy örömre! (Come and Rejoice!). This performance is a joint production of Müpa Budapest and the Hungarian Heritage House – Hungarian State Folk Ensemble.

Obviously, without greater geometric knowledge, no one can cope with Woody Allen’s love polygons, especially when one of their apexes is a city. This time Manhattan is right at the centre. Cinematographer Gordon Willis invented a new language: for the first time in Allen’s life, the film is wide-screen and in black and white. The wider picture shows more of the city. And the lack of colour makes the city look like artists’ photographs. Woody Allen’s heroes have already expressed the view in his previous films that living in New York is not a matter of choice, because there is nowhere else to live. This is made clear right at the beginning of the movie by the hero of this story, Isaac Davis, a writer who is struggling with the first chapter of a novel.

Manhattan is in many ways a continuation of Annie Hall. Not of the story, but of the idea. Woody Allen, however, restrains his hero this time. Isaac is nowhere near as witty and omniscient as Alvy Singer. And what’s more! The script brings him together with a woman, Mary (Diane Keaton), who is wittier, who has a sharper tongue. And what is particularly touching about this film is that its hesitant characters, trained on various analytics, are full of emotion. And it’s not easy for them to cope. The use of a wide screen is also extremely exciting. While the narrower screen kept the characters together, the wide open space allows them to creep in and out of the picture during painful scenes. Surprisingly, this makes everything a little more dramatic. (Don’t worry, Gershwin’s music helps you through.) Manhattan is Woody Allen’s beautiful, emotional meditation on the altered state of consciousness called love. And it bears little resemblance to the romantic comedies of our time, whose beginning, end and stakes are love itself. Instead, we can consider that love, break-ups, betrayals, reunions and so on are all part of a larger game – life.

A szeretetmise zeneszerzője Szirtes Edina, a különleges látvány és az egyedi hangzásvilág megteremtését létrehozó csapatban együttműködött Terjék Gábor sound designer, Klimó Péter, aki a bámulatos díszletet jegyzi, és Kasza Emese jelmeztervező. Az előadás különleges „fellépője” a világhírű dél-afrikai bábművész, Janni Younge által tervezett medvebáb: Vági Bence rendezésében az artisták és táncosok együtt mozognak a monumentális, élethű lénnyel.

Love is all there is: The latest production by Recirquel Budapest, Hungary’s leading contemporary circus company, brings forth the only primeval energy that spans space and time to connect us all. Directed by artistic director Bence Vági, Solus Amor employs „cirque danse”, a genre created with and by the company over the course of several years, in a monumental production drawing its power from our contemporary yearning for nature and wonderment.

A few years ago, a new genre was born here in Budapest: foreign critics were the first to dub this novel art form „cirque danse” as created by Bence Vági and his globetrotting circus company. Contemporary circus fused with traditional and modern dance brings this hybrid genre to the stage: acrobatics inspire amazement and awe, while dance facilitates self-expression, relays the subtler shades of meaning and tells a story. Following the international success of Non Solus and My Land, Solus Amor completes the trilogy by telling the story of the emotion that binds our universe, love. The music for this celebration of love was composed by Edina Szirtes. Behind the extraordinary visuals and unique sound effects lies the creative team of Gábor Terjék, sound designer, Péter Klimó, who designed the awe-inspiring set, and costume designer Emese Kasza. The performance’s special ‘guest star’ is a bear constructed by the world-renowned South African puppeteer Janni Younge. Under Bence Vági’s direction, the acrobats and dancers move together to bring this colossal being to life.

Mi lehet jobb egy kórusnál? Két kórus. Az énekkari kultúra szerelmesei számára fogalom a Wiener Sängerknaben, a Bécsi Énekesfiúk együttese, amely már számos alkalommal koncertezett Magyarországon, maradandó élménnyel ajándékozva meg közönségét. Ezúttal a legendás kórus nem egyedül érkezik, és a vele együtt fellépő, hozzá szoros szálakkal kapcsolódó másik énekkar, a Chorus Juventus igazi felfedezésnek ígérkezik, pedig az együttes szorosan kapcsolódik a Wiener Sängerknabenhez, hiszen annak korábbi tagjaiból alakult. A műsor, amelyet a két énekkar megszólaltat, a karácsonyi hangverseny műfajához méltón illik a szeretet ünnepének gondolatköréhez.

A Müpa karácsonyi koncertjén a két énekkar Jó pásztorok címmel szólaltat meg összeállítást a Jézus születésének ünnepéhez kapcsolódó legszebb pásztorénekekből és motettákból. A műsorszámok között olyan örökzöld alkotások is szerepelnek, mint az Adeste fideles, a Joy to the World, és természetesen Gruber világhírű karácsonyi éneke, a Csendes éj.

What could be better than one choir? Two choirs. For lovers of choral culture, the Wiener Sängerknaben, the Vienna Boys’ Choir, is well-known; they have performed in Hungary on a number of occasions and given their audiences a memorable experience. This time, the legendary choir will be accompanied by another choir performing with them. Chorus Juventus, which is closely linked to the Wiener Sängerknaben, appears to be a real new discovery, as it was formed from former members thereof. The programme, which will be performed by the two choirs, matches the genre of the Christmas concert and the theme of the feast of love.

Wiener Sängerknaben was established as a group of the singing boys of the Viennese court. Its tradition goes back many centuries, as demonstrated vividly by the fact that Franz Schubert used to be a member of the choir. The fresh sound of the boy sopranos and boy altos gives their performances a unique charm. The tradition of Chorus Juventus is much more recent: the choir was formed from students of the secondary school attached to the Wiener Sängerknaben, it consists of boys and girls (but only boys come to Budapest) and its history dates back to just over a decade. The work of Chorus Juventus is supported by nine vocal teachers. Similar to the boys’ choir, it has a very rich repertoire and performs at various concert venues, both alone and together with the boys’ choir. At the Christmas concert at Müpa Budapest, the two choirs will perform a selection of the most beautiful shepherd songs and motets associated with the feast of the birth of Jesus, entitled Good Shepherds. The works on the programme include evergreen pieces such as Adeste fideles, Joy to the World and, naturally, Gruber’s world-famous Christmas carol Silent Night.

Ünnep könnyedén

Ez az ünnep mindenki számára tartogat valamilyen meglepetést. Tóth Vera énekesnő már több mint tíz éve karácsonyozik együtt a legpatinásabb hazai big banddel, a Budapest Jazz Orchestrával. Így a könnyűzene és a jazz szerelmesei egyaránt örülhetnek, s ez alkalommal még a klasszikus hangzáselemek is fontos szerephez jutnak a Danubia Zenekar vonósainak jóvoltából. A hagyományos ünnepi dallamok mellett Vera dalai is felcsendülnek. S ha mindez nem lenne elég, további sztárvendégek: Gubik Petra, Vitáris Iván és Duka Laci – valamint egy meglepetésvendég – teszik igazán felejthetetlenné az alkalmat.

Tóth Vera mindig hitt benne, hogy a legkülönfélébb stílusú előadóművészek utat találhatnak egymás felé, közönségük számára pedig olyan értékes pillanatokat teremthetnek, amelyeket csak saját közegükből kilépve ragadhatnak meg. A karácsony meghitt ünnepe legtöbbünk számára hasonló jelentést hordoz, ami szintén segít a közös zenei élmény kiteljesítésében. Vera az idén 25 éves jubileumát ünneplő Budapest Jazz Orchestra és a Danubia Zenekar mellett további kivételes előadóművész barátait invitálja a Bartók Béla Nemzeti Hangversenyterem színpadára. Bátran állíthatjuk, hogy az idei vendégek is különleges személyiségükkel még izgalmasabbá teszik a koncertet, és együtt bizonyítják be a fellépők, hogy milyen sokféle dallam fér el egy színpadon.

This holiday brings a surprise for all. Singer Vera Tóth has been celebrating Christmas with the most iconic Hungarian big band, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, for more than 10 years. So lovers of pop music and jazz can both enjoy it and, on this occasion, even the classical sound elements play an important role, courtesy of Danubia Orchestra’s string musicians. In addition to traditional festive tunes, Vera’s songs will also be performed. And, should that be not enough, more guest stars: Petra Gubik, Iván Vitáris and Laci Duka – as well as another surprise guest – will make the occasion truly unforgettable.

Vera Tóth has always believed that performers of different styles can find ways to come together and create precious moments for their audiences that can only be created by stepping out of their own medium. The intimate festivity of Christmas carries a similar meaning for most of us, which also helps to achieve the shared musical experience. In addition to the Budapest Jazz Orchestra celebrating its 25-year jubilee this year and the Danubia Orchestra, Vera invites other exceptional performer friends to the stage of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. We can safely say that this year’s guests will make the concert more enjoyable with their unique personalities, and together the performers will prove how many different melodies can be present on stage at once.

Haydn: A teremtés – részletek

Csukd be a szemed, hallgasd a zenét, és figyelj a megjelenő képekre! Hallod az őskáosz gomolygását, a fénysugár megszületését? Azt, ahogyan a kék bolygó előbukkan a ködből, majd a legelső vízi és szárazföldi élőlények benépesítik? És kezdetektől fogva ott a szeretet, ami a bibliai emberpár, Ádám és Éva megjelenésével válik az univerzumot irányító legfőbb erővé. Ha újév, akkor Fischer Ádám és Haydn: a délutáni koncertre elsősorban, de persze nem kizárólag az iskolásokat várjuk.

Ez a Müpa egyik legrégebbi, nemes hagyománya: az új esztendő első napja a nagy osztrák zeneszerző, Haydn jegyében telik. Nemzetközi hírű karmesterünk, Fischer Ádám régóta küldetésének tartja, hogy a klasszikus zene iránti rajongást minél előbb átadja a következő generációknak. Partnerei ebben idén az Osztrák-Magyar Haydn Zenekar és a Nemzeti Énekkar, továbbá három kiváló szólista, Rácz Rita, Megyesi Zoltán és Bakonyi Marcell. Az általuk magyarul énekelt részleteket a karmester kommentálja, magyarázza és kontextusba helyezi. Hagyatkozzunk bátran a fülünkre: Fischer Ádám és muzsikustársai célja, hogy a zenei hallás elvontnak tűnő világa ne ismeretlen, félelmetes területként, hanem hívogató, gazdag országként jelenjen meg az iskolás korosztály számára. Haydn A teremtés című oratóriumából gondosan válogatott, változatos tematikájú részletek tökéletes bevezetést nyújtanak az új évhez és a szimfonikus zene, illetve az oratórium műfajához egyaránt. Haydn: The Creation – excerpts

Close your eyes, listen to the music and watch the images that appear in your mind! Do you hear the rumbling of the primordial chaos and the sudden glimmer of a ray of light? The way the blue planet emerges from the gloom to be populated by the very first aquatic and terrestrial organisms? And from the beginning there is love, which becomes the main force controlling the universe with the arrival of the biblical human couple Adam and Eve. New Year’s means Ádám Fischer and Haydn, and the afternoon concert is primarily, but of course not exclusively, for schoolchildren.

This is one of Müpa Budapest’s oldest and most noble traditions: the first day of the new year is spent in the spirit of the great Austrian composer Haydn. Our internationally renowned conductor Ádám Fischer has long made it his mission to impart the passion for classical music to the next generations at as early an age as possible. His partners this year are the Austrian-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic and the Hungarian National Choir, along with three outstanding soloists: Rita Rácz, Zoltán Megyesi and Marcell Bakonyi. Explaining with context and commentary the excerpts these artists will sing in Hungarian will be the conductor himself. Go ahead and trust your ears: Ádám Fischer and his fellow musicians aim to help school-age children approach the seemingly abstract world of listening to music not as something unknown and terrifying, but as a rich and inviting realm to explore. The thematically varied and carefully selected excerpts from Haydn’s oratorio The Creation offer a perfect introduction to both the new year and to the genres of symphonic music and oratorio. The secret lies in the composer’s refined simplicity: when evoking the creation of the new world, he chooses colours from his rich palette that prompt young people and their parents alike to gaze at and realise that there are few things more wonderful than being alive.

Jó dolog az állandóság, életünk tele van megnyugtató ismétlődésekkel, melyek fogódzót nyújtanak és segítenek tájékozódni. A Müpa is biztos pontot kínál a január elsején megrendezett Újévi hangversenyekkel. De vajon hányan vették észre, hogy A teremtés, Haydn remekműve, melyet újév napján oly sokan hallgatnak Fischer Ádám ihletett vezényletével, újévi fogadalmainkhoz is inspirációval szolgál? Pedig így van: A teremtés csupa lehetőség, és valamennyi az életünket teheti jobbá.

Aki újévkor meghallgatja a genezistörténetet hangokba öntő oratóriumot, megfogadhatja: a következő évben minden alkalmat megragad, hogy valami jót, szépet, értékeset hozzon létre. A teremtés arra is biztat, hogy vegyük észre a világ kimeríthetetlen változatosságát. No meg arra, hogy bízzunk és reméljünk, legyünk játékosak. Haydn 1797/98-ban alkotott nagyszabású kompozícióját ezúttal két külföldi és egy hazai szólista tolmácsolja. A német szoprán, Mojca Erdmann sokoldalúan tájékozódik a stílusok között, de különösen otthonos a bécsi klasszika világában. A tenor, Rab Gyula a budapesti Zeneakadémia után az Egyesült Királyságban folytatta tanulmányait, Purcelltől Mozartig, Bachtól Kodályig a legkülönfélébb szerzők műveit tolmácsolja sikerrel. A német-brit lírai bariton, Benjamin Appl előszeretettel szólaltatja meg a dalrepertoár remekeit, nem csoda, hiszen Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau utolsó tanítványa lehetett. A Müpában először néhány éve a Rising Stars-sorozatban kápráztatta el közönségét, legutóbb pedig a Bartók Tavasz Művészeti Hetek keretében hallhattuk éteri Bach-interpretációját a Zeneakadémián. Jelenleg a müncheni Gärtnerplatz Színház tagja. Fischer Ádámot, a Budapesti Wagner-napok spiritus rectorát nem kell bemutatni, a Nemzeti Énekkar fogalom, a zenekar pedig, amely 2024-ben A teremtés vokális szólamai mögé hangszeres hátteret fest, létét köszönheti a dirigensnek, hiszen elődjét, az Osztrák-Magyar Haydn Zenekart Fischer Ádám alapította 1987-ben.

Consistency is a good thing: our lives are full of reassuring repetitions that provide us with an anchor and help us remain oriented. Müpa Budapest too offers some sure footing for our lives with its New Year’s concerts held on the first of January each year. But how many people have noticed that Haydn’s masterpiece The Creation, which so many of us listen to on New Year’s Day under the inspired baton of Ádám Fischer, also serves as a motivation for making our New Year’s resolutions? And yet it does: The Creation is full of possibilities, and all of them can make our lives better.

Anyone who listens to this oratorio that converts the Genesis story into musical notes on New Year’s can bet on it: in the coming year, they will seize every opportunity to create things of goodness, beauty and value. The Creation also encourages us to notice the inexhaustible diversity the world contains. Not to mention to have trust and hope, and to be playful. Interpreting Haydn’s large-scale composition from 1797/98 this time around will be one Hungarian soloist joined by two others from abroad. Versatile in terms of styles, German soprano Mojca Erdmann feels particularly at home in the world of Viennese Classicism. The tenor, Gyula Rab, continued his studies in the United Kingdom after graduating from Budapest’s Liszt Academy and now successfully interprets works by a wide variety of composers, ranging from Purcell to Mozart, Bach and Kodály. The German-British lyric baritone Benjamin Appl is fond of singing the masterpieces of the song repertoire, and no wonder, since he had the honour of being Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau’s last student. He first dazzled the audience at Müpa Budapest a few years ago in the Rising Stars series, and most recently, we got to hear his ethereal take on Bach at the Liszt Academy as part of the Bartók Spring International Art Weeks. He is currently a member of Munich’s Gärtnerplatz Theater. Ádám Fischer, the guiding spirit behind the Budapest Wagner Days festival, requires no introduction. The Hungarian National Choir concept owes its existence to the conductor, as does the Haydn Philharmonie, which in 2024 will paint the instrumental background behind the vocal parts in The Creation, as its predecessor, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, was founded by Fischer in 1987.

Mindezt kritikusai írták róla, ő pedig évek óta a legkülönfélébb formációkban teljesedik ki: hol szólóban, hol trióban, nagyobb együttessel vagy szimfonikusokkal, netán „partyzenét” játszva tartja lázban hallgatóit. A Müpa színpada kitüntetett hely számára, hiszen zenei mondandóját itt bontotta, élesítette, színesítette ki legjobban az elmúlt évtizedben. Évindító, újévi koncertjén, ahogy már megszokhattuk, a lajkói oeuvre újabb fejezete kezdődik-folytatódik, mindig újabb kísérletet téve a hegedűjáték határainak megismerésében, a nagybetűs zene megélésében és megértésében! Tánc-szín-játék Petőfi Sándor életéről

Csupa tánc, csupa szín, csupa játék: ilyen lesz a Magyar Nemzeti Táncegyüttesnek a halhatatlan költő, Petőfi Sándor ihlette tánc-szín-játéka. Igazi jelkép ő, nemcsak a tegnap, de a ma fiataljai számára is, aki nem csupán a tankönyvek oldalain, de az ifjú szívekben is joggal keresi a helyét. A színpadon negyven táncos oldalán megjelenik Petőfi alakja is: aki itt, élőben meghallgatja a Nemzeti dalt vagy a Szeptember végént, hosszú időre elraktározza az élményt. A jelszó tehát: Éljen Petőfi!

A Kossuth-díjas Zsuráfszky Zoltán és a Magyar Nemzeti Táncegyüttes Éljen Petőfi! című – az általuk ki- és feltalált műfajmegjelölésű – „tánc-szín-játékában” kifejezetten a fiatal nézőközönséget érdeklő témák mentén járja végig a sűrű szövésű életút kiemelt jelentőségű állomásait. Lesz itt szabadság, meg persze szerelem is: az 1848-as forradalomra és Petőfi Sándor abban betöltött szerepére különös hangsúly esik az újragondolt előadásban. A címszerepben, váltásban, korosztálya két kiválóságát, Herczegh Péter és Horváth Márk színművészeket látjuk és halljuk. Ők azok, akik az emblematikus Petőfi-verseket a Magyar Nemzeti Táncegyüttes táncművészei társaságában tolmácsolják: a sorokból áradó hazaszeretetet végre nem csak érezni, de mélységében érteni is fogjuk. Az együttesvezető Zsuráfszky Zoltán és Zs. Vincze Zsuzsa közös munkája látványos, színes táncképekkel, vidám és megható táncjelenetekkel idézi meg Petőfi rövidre szabott útjának epizódjait. Mert Zsuráfszky Zoltán szavaival ő az, aki „mindig egy üstökös, egy géniusz marad, aki a forradalmiságával, a lelkével, a verseivel utat mutat”. Azt is reméli a koreográfus, hogy Petőfi nagy verseit együtt mondják majd előadók és nézők, hiszen ezt az életművet mindannyiunknak ismernie kell.

Plenty of dancing, plenty of colour and plenty of play: that’s what you can expect from the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble’s dance drama inspired by the immortal poet, Sándor Petőfi. Petőfi is a true Hungarian icon of yesterday’s and today’s youth, too. His rightful place is not only in textbooks, but also in the hearts of the young. The figure of Petőfi will appear on stage alongside 40 dancers: if you have the chance to listen to the National Song or the At the End of September here, you will treasure the experience for many years to come. The battle cry, then, is: Long live Petőfi!

Through topics that should pique the interest of the youthful audience, the Long Live Petőfi dance drama from Kossuth Prize-winning Zoltán Zsuráfszky and the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble – who created and invented the genre themselves – will fully explore the most significant milestones of Petőfi’s densely packed life. There will be freedom and love, too, of course. In this reconceptualised performance, there will be particular emphasis on the 1848 Hungarian Revolution and the role Sándor Petőfi played in it. Alternating in the title role, we can look forward to seeing and hearing two outstanding talents of their generation, the actors Péter Herczegh and Márk Horváth. They will alternately interpret iconic Petőfi poems accompanied by the dancers of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, giving the audience the opportunity to not only feel the patriotism emanating from his lines, but also to finally understand it on a profound level. The joint work of ensemble leader Zoltán Zsuráfszky and Zsuzsa Zs. Vincze will honour episodes from Petőfi’s short-lived career with spectacular and colourful dance images and joyous, stirring dancing scenes. Because, in the words of Zoltán Zsuráfszky, Petőfi is a figure who „will always remain a shooting star, a genius who shows us the way forward with his revolutionism, his spirit and his poems.” The choreographer also hopes that the performers and members of the audience will recite Petőfi’s great poems in unison. After all, it is essential for every Hungarian to be familiar with his life’s work.

„Az a Nabucco – gyönyörű, gyönyörű, gyönyörű!” Ezt mondogatta még napok múltán is a Nabucco ősbemutatójának tán leghozzáértőbb nézője és hallgatója, bizonyos Gaetano Donizetti, és alighanem ilyesmit érezhet majd e Met-közvetítés publikuma is. Hiszen Elijah Moshinsky időtállóan látványos rendezésében a címszerepet a hangban is parancsoló erejű George Gagnidze formálja meg, míg Abigél nehéz szólama New York egyik kedvencének, az ukrán Ljudmila Monasztirszkának jut.

Bármily meglepő, a Nabuccót sokáig alig-alig játszották a Metropolitanben, mígnem Elijah Moshinsky 2001-es produkciója végre itt is slágeroperává tette Verdi első világsikerét. Azóta – Juan Ponstól Leo Nuccin át Plácido Domingóig – számos jelentős énekes öltötte magára az önmagát istennek nyilvánító újbabilóniai uralkodó jelmezét, s most a remek grúz bariton, George Gagnidze is bemutatkozik e szerepben. A Daniele Callegari vezényelte előadásban állócsillagok, visszatérők és debütálók egyaránt akadnak. Így új ismerősünkké válhat a társulatban Izmáel szerepével bemutatkozó fiatal dél-koreai tenor, SeokJong Baek, míg Dmitrij Beloszelszkij lenyűgöző basszusát már megcsodálhattuk korábban is Zakariás főpapi szólamában. Ljudmila Monasztirszka a Metben és a világ számos más jelentős operaházában is többször bizonyította már, hogy Abigél szerepének ma ő az egyik leghivatottabb birtokosa. S ha őt a produkció állócsillagának nevezzük, mi mást mondhatnánk a New York-i operaház énekkaráról, amely a nevezetes Szabadságkórus megszólaltatásával minden alkalommal bizonyítja ápolt hangzását, pompás összhangját és testületi szellemét.

The premiere of Nabucco left a lasting impression on even the most knowledgeable and discerning viewers and listeners, such as Gaetano Donizetti, who was overheard saying „Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!” even days after the performance. Undoubtedly, the audience of this Met transmission will feel something similar. Under the timeless and visually stunning direction of Elijah Moshinsky, George Gagnidze takes on the title role of Nabucco with his commanding voice, while the challenging solo of Abigaille is expertly handled by Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska, a favourite among New York audiences.

Despite its global success, Nabucco was rarely staged at the Metropolitan for many years, until Elijah Moshinsky’s production in 2001 finally made it a hit opera at the venue. Now, the role of the self-proclaimed godlike ruler of Neo-Babylon is being presented by the excellent Georgian baritone, George Gagnidze, joining the ranks of other significant singers like Juan Pons, Leo Nucci, and Plácido Domingo. The performance conducted by Daniele Callegari boasts a cast of seasoned performers, returning favourites, and fresh faces making their debut. Keep an eye out for SeokJong Baek, a young tenor from South Korea, who will be making his debut in the role of Ismaele. Meanwhile, the stunning bass of Dmitrij Beloselskiy will be familiar to those who have previously admired his performance as High Priest Zaccaria. With multiple performances at the Met and other world-renowned opera houses, Liudmyla Monastyrska has established herself as one of the most dedicated interpreters of the role of Abigaille. If we call her the shining star of the production, what else could we say about the chorus of the New York Metropolitan, which proves its polished sound, splendid harmony, and team spirit on every occasion with the performance of the renowned Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves.

Csak a szeretet: az egyetlen és ősi, időn és téren átívelő, mindannyiunkat összekötő energiáról beszél Magyarország első számú újcirkusz-társulata, a Recirquel új produkciója. A Vági Bence művészeti vezető rendezte Solus Amor a társulattal való többéves közös munka során megteremtett „cirque danse” nyelvén megszólaló monumentális előadás korunk természet és csoda iránti vágyódásából meríti erejét.

Néhány évvel ezelőtt Budapesten született meg az új műfaj: Vági Bence és világjáró újcirkusz-társulata, a Recirquel munkáit külföldi kritikusok sorolták be először a cirque danse általuk feltalált zsánerébe. Az újcirkusz, a klasszikus és a modern tánc találkozása hibrid elegyet hoz létre a színpadon: az akrobatika a káprázatot és az ámulatba ejtést szolgálja, a tánc lehetőséget ad az önkifejezésre, a finomabb jelentésárnyalatok közvetítésére és a történetmesélésre. A Non Solus és a My Land nemzetközi sikere után a trilógia harmadik pillére a Solus Amor, amely az univerzumot összetartó érzésről, a szeretetről mesél. A szeretetmise zeneszerzője Szirtes Edina, a különleges látvány és az egyedi hangzásvilág megteremtését létrehozó csapatban együttműködött Terjék Gábor sound designer, Klimó Péter, aki a bámulatos díszletet jegyzi, és Kasza Emese jelmeztervező. Az előadás különleges „fellépője” a világhírű dél-afrikai bábművész, Janni Younge által tervezett medvebáb: Vági Bence rendezésében az artisták és táncosok együtt mozognak a monumentális, élethű lénnyel.

Love is all there is: The latest production by Recirquel Budapest, Hungary’s leading contemporary circus company, brings forth the only primeval energy that spans space and time to connect us all. Directed by artistic director Bence Vági, Solus Amor employs „cirque danse”, a genre created with and by the company over the course of several years, in a monumental production drawing its power from our contemporary yearning for nature and wonderment.

A few years ago, a new genre was born here in Budapest: foreign critics were the first to dub this novel art form „cirque danse” as created by Bence Vági and his globetrotting circus company. Contemporary circus fused with traditional and modern dance brings this hybrid genre to the stage: acrobatics inspire amazement and awe, while dance facilitates self-expression, relays the subtler shades of meaning and tells a story. Following the international success of Non Solus and My Land, Solus Amor completes the trilogy by telling the story of the emotion that binds our universe, love. The music for this celebration of love was composed by Edina Szirtes. Behind the extraordinary visuals and unique sound effects lies the creative team of Gábor Terjék, sound designer, Péter Klimó, who designed the awe-inspiring set, and costume designer Emese Kasza. The performance’s special ‘guest star’ is a bear constructed by the world-renowned South African puppeteer Janni Younge. Under Bence Vági’s direction, the acrobats and dancers move together to bring this colossal being to life.

A Subtones nagy mértékben felelős azért, hogy kezdünk kifogyni a stiláris meghatározásokból, iránymutató jelzőkből. Mire körülírnánk zenéjüket, az már tovább is szökken, hogy saját címkét követeljen magának. Ez alkalommal, amikor a svéd szaxofonos, Otis Sandsjö is csatlakozik vendégként a csapathoz, tovább fokozódnak az izgalmak. Külön erre az estére tervezett műsorral készülnek, amelyben a kísérleti elektronika és az avantgárd találkozik a vokális jazzel, teret hagyva a briliáns vendégszaxofonos játéka mellett a zenekartagok megszólalásainak is.

A Subicz Gábor vezette Subtones Magyarország egyik legfrissebb jazz-pop supergroupja. Zenéjükben súlyos triphop-groove-ok, gyönyörűen énekelt érdekes, mégis fülbemászó dallamok, füstös jazzszólók keverednek és alkotnak különleges masszát. 2020-as debütáló albumuk, az Octopus műfaji határokon átívelő, dalközpontú számaival hamar belopta magát a közönség szívébe, olyannyira, hogy a fizikai formában létező összes lemezüket elkapkodták. Lendületes és virtuóz előadásaikkal közönségkedvenc koncertzenekarrá váltak. 2022-ben Nem segít más című dalukkal másodikak lettek A dal című műsorban. A szerzemény helyet kapott a soron következő, Lángolj című lemezükön is. Az albumon kizárólag magyar nyelvű dalok hallhatók, Szepesi Mátyás, Závada Péter és a Subtones-tagok szövegeivel, amelyek nem kis mértékben járultak hozzá, hogy a Lángolj 2023-ban Fonogram-díjas lett az év jazz-albuma kategóriában.
Otis Sandsjö „űrbéli” szaxofonjátékával, a hiphop, az elektronika és a jazz elemeit felhasználó audio-mozaikjaival kivívta a szakma és a közönség elismerését Európa-szerte. Y-Otis nevű, berlini székhelyű zenekarával már két sikeres albumot készített.

The Subtones have a lot to answer for: we are beginning to run out of stylistic boundaries and guiding signs. By the time you manage to pin down their music, it has already escaped your grasp to set its own label. For this particular occasion, the Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö will join the group as a special guest to add to the excitement. We can look forward to a specially prepared set, where experimental electronica and avant-garde meet vocal jazz, leaving space for the brilliant guest saxophonist’s play and solos from the other members of the band.

Led by Gábor Subicz, the Subtones are one of the freshest jazz-pop supergroups in Hungary. Their music blends heavy trip-hop grooves, beautifully sung, intriguing yet catchy melodies and smoking jazz solos to create a unique whole. With its boundary defying, melody-centred songs, their 2020 debut album Octopus soon captured the hearts of its listeners – so much so that they immediately rushed to buy up all available physical copies of the record. The band’s energetic, virtuoso performances have made them concert favourites. Their 2022 song Nem segít más (Nothing Else Helps) won them second place in Hungarian music contest, A Dal (The Song). The track also featured on their next album, Lángolj (Burn). The album features songs solely in the Hungarian language, with Mátyás Szepesi, Péter Závada and members of the Subtones writing lyrics that were a major contribution to Lángolj winning the 2023 Fonogram Award, in the Jazz Album of the Year category.
Otis Sandsjö’s ‘space-age’ saxophone play, with its audio mosaics employing elements of hip-hop, electronica and jazz, has earned the acclaim of critics and the general public throughout Europe. He has released two successful albums with his Berlin-based band, Y-Otis.

At Müpa Budapest, one of the most productive and creative artistic pairings in contemporary Hungarian culture will present a brand new show. This world premiere is underpinned by the experiences of their early, highly successful collaborations, yet promises to be an utterly new production, packed full of surprises.

The new show from Tandem will not be breaking with the tried-and-tested formula – as before, the show will by a mix of a concert performance and reading theatre. The content is new, however, featuring an encounter between orchestral poetic montages, new Grecsó prose writings and instrumental music, not to mention new songs and sung verses. Time Vessel is an exploration of self-knowledge, with a bittersweet appraisal of youth and self-deprecating nostalgia. This is a thematic performance, yet one made up of independent writings and songs, and one that is open towards all forms of art.

Hamupipőke meséjének eredete az ókori Egyiptomig nyúlik vissza. A világon az egyik legtöbbet feldolgozott, számos alkalommal megfilmesített és előadott mese. A balettváltozat zenéjét Szergej Prokofjev szerezte. Hamupipőke gúnynevét anyja halála után, mostohanővéreitől és mostohaanyjától kapta, akik a lányt házuk cselédjévé tették, még a kandalló tisztítását is vele végeztették. Amikor a trónörökös bált hirdetett, hogy a legszebb leányok közül párt találjon magának, a gonosz nővérek hiába próbálták megakadályozni Hamupipőkét, aki egy jó tündér segítségével titokban mégis megjelent az estélyen: varázslatos ruhájában és arany cipellőjében ő tündökölt a legszebben. A királyfi rögtön beleszeretett, de hiába próbálta kitalálni, hogy ki ő, a lány minden este megszökött. Ekkor a királyfi a lépcső egyik fokát szurokkal kenette be, amibe beleragadt Hamupipőke arany cipellője. A királyfi valamennyi leány lábára felpróbálta a cipőt, de az végül csak a szépséges Hamupipőke lábára illett. Azonnal elvette feleségül, és még tán ma is élnek, ha meg nem haltak.

The origin of the story of Cinderella extends back to ancient Egypt. It is one of the most frequently treated fairy tales in the world, having inspired many film and stage adaptations. The music for the ballet version was composed by Sergei Prokofiev. Cinderella received this derisive nickname after the death of her mother forced her to serve as a maidservant in the home of her stepsisters and stepmother, where they even made her clean out the ashes in the fireplace. When the heir to the throne announced that he was holding a ball in order to find himself a mate from among the most beautiful girls in the land, the wicked sisters attempted to prevent Cinderella from going. However, with the help of a good fairy, they were thwarted when Cinderella arrived at the dance looking the most resplendent of all in her enchanting gown and golden slippers. The prince immediately fell in love with her, but his attempts to discover her identity failed, as the girl fled each evening. Then the prince spread pitch on one of the steps in the staircase, and Cinderella’s golden slipper stuck to it. The prince had every girl in the land try on the shoe, but in the end it only fit the foot of the beautiful Cinderella. He immediately married her, and they lived happily ever after.

Különleges technikai felkészültségű hangszerjátékosok mindig is léteztek, de túlzás nélkül állíthatjuk, hogy a virtuozitás modern fogalmát Liszt Ferenc teremtette meg az 1830-as években. Persze nem előzmények nélkül: óriási hatást gyakorolt rá például „az ördög hegedűsének” tartott Niccolò Paganini. A koncerten annak járunk utána, miként vonta bűvkörébe Paganini hegedülése Lisztet, s hogy ennek hatására káprázatos zongorajátékával miként hajtotta uralma alá Liszt egész Európát.

Liszt Ferenc legalább olyan intenzív hatást gyakorolt Európa zenei életére, amilyet a kontinens zenekultúrája gyakorolt rá. Huszonnyolc és harminchat éves kora között bejárta egész Európát: Lisszabontól Szentpétervárig és Dublintól Isztambulig közel ezer hangversenyt adott zongoraművészként, közben újraértelmezte a virtuozitást, feltalálta a szóló zongoraest műfaját, megteremtette a sztárkultusz jelenségét, és tevékeny szerepet játszott a klasszikus zene fogalmának megalkotásában. Szélpál Szilveszter vezetésével, Fazekas Gergely szakértői közreműködésével virtuálisan bejárjuk Európa számos fontos koncerthelyszínét Liszt nyomában: megtudhatjuk, milyen hatást gyakorolt a fiatal Lisztre Paganini párizsi koncertje, miként indította útjára nemzetközi koncertkarrierjét, hogyan állította össze műsorait, milyen marketing trükkökkel tüzelte fel közönségét, s hogy a közönségéből milyen lázas, olykor már-már tébolyult reakciókat váltott ki. Liszt Ferenc zongorázását Balog József zongoraművész, Paganini hegedülését Langer Ágnes hegedűművész idézi meg.

While there have always been instrumentalists with remarkable technical skills, it is no exaggeration to say that the modern concept of virtuosity was created by Franz Liszt in the 1830s. Not, of course, without precedents: for example, Niccolò Paganini, considered ‘the devil’s violinist’, had a huge impact on him. At this concert, we will explore how Paganini’s mastery of the violin so enchanted Liszt, he in turn conquered all of Europe with his dazzling piano playing.

Liszt exerted an influence on the musical life of Europe that was at least as intense as the one it exerted on him. Between the ages of 28 and 36, he travelled all over Europe: from Lisbon to Saint Petersburg and from Dublin to Istanbul, giving nearly a thousand concerts as a pianist as he simultaneously redefined the notion of virtuosity, invented the genre of the solo piano recital, created the phenomenon of the cult of stardom and played an active role in establishing the concept of classical music. Under the guidance of Szilveszter Szélpál, expertly assisted by Gergely Fazekas, we will follow in Liszt’s footsteps on a virtual tour of a number of important European concert venues he visited, where we will learn what effect Paganini’s concert in Paris had on the young musician, how he launched his international concert career, how he put together his programmes, what marketing tricks he used to fire up his audience, and how he then provoked feverish, sometimes almost delirious, reactions from them. Evoking the sounds of Liszt and Paganini playing their respective instruments will be pianist József Balog, and violinist Ágnes Langer.

Ki ne hallott volna Leonard Zeligről? Jelentős alaknak kellett lennie, ha a kitűnő Susan Sontag és a Nobel-díjas író, Saul Bellow ilyen komolyan nyilatkozik róla rögtön a film elején. Valamiről lemaradtunk volna? Nosza, kapjuk elő a nézőtér sötétjében a mobilunkat, írjuk be a keresőbe, hogy „Leonard Zelig”. Az ügyesebbek rögtön létre is hozhatják a közösségi hálón a „Leonard Zelig” oldalt, s mire kimennek a moziból, már tucatnyi követőjük lesz. Zelignek léteznie kellett – fekete-fehér filmdokumentumok tanúsítják. Maga F. Scott Fitzgerald figyelt fel rá egy partin… De bocs, miért hasonlít annyira Zelig Woody Allenre?

Tisztázzunk néhány dolgot: 1983-ban nem lapult a zsebünkben mindent helyettesítő eszköz (okostelefon), nem kellett másodpercenként vívódnunk, hogy amit látunk, az valódi-e, és maga a műfaj, az áldokumentumfilm, a mockumentary sem volt különösebben elterjedt. Negyven évvel ezelőtt még szenvedélyes viták tárgyát képezhette, hogy szabad-e, etikus-e a dokumentumokat utólag leforgatott jelenetekkel gazdagítani/hígítani. Így aztán roppant könnyű volt átverni bennünket. Nevettünk, mert azért néhány perc múltán megértettük, hogy Zelig, a kaméleonember története játék, vicc. Vagy mégsem az. A manhattani slemil zsidócska ez alkalommal ugyanis az elfogadásról, az elfogadtatásról elmélkedik. Az asszimiláció dilemmájáról. Hősünk villámsebes alakváltó, aki bármely közegben felveszi a társaság tagjainak alakját, modorát, nyelvét. Hja, kérem, így könnyű! Ki ne fogadná el azt, aki olyan, mint ő maga? Igen ám, de ki is valójában Leonard Zelig, ha mindig más? Átkozottul fogós kérdés ez ma is. Még manhattani zsidócskának sem kell lennünk ahhoz, hogy a megfelelni vágyás, a „compliance” 21. századi világában eltévelyedjünk hasznos, profitábilis alakoskodásaink erdejében. Nem biztos, hogy ma egyszerűbb megmondani, kik vagyunk, kihez tartozunk, s miért is szeretnek bennünket. Ha egyáltalán…

Is there anyone who has never heard of Leonard Zelig? He must have been an important figure indeed to warrant having the excellent Susan Sontag and the Nobel Prize-winning writer Saul Bellow both make such an earnest statement about him right at the beginning of the film. Did we miss something? Well then, let’s take our cell phones out in the darkness of the auditorium and type the name ‘Leonard Zelig’ into the search engine. The smarter ones among us can then immediately create a ‘Leonard Zelig’ page on social media, and by the time they leave the cinema, they will already have dozens of followers. Zelig had to exist – as documented on black and white film. F. Scott Fitzgerald himself noticed him at a party… But, wait: why does Zelig look so much like Woody Allen?

Let’s clear up a few things: in 1983, we didn’t have a device (a smartphone) that replaced everything else in our pockets, we didn’t have to fight every second to decide whether what we were seeing was real, and the genre of the mockumentary wasn’t particularly widespread yet either. Forty years ago, the question of whether it is permissible or ethical to enrich/dilute documentary footage with scenes filmed afterwards might still have provoked passionate debate. This made it very easy to trick us. But we laughed about it a few minutes later, when it dawned on us that the story of Zelig the human chameleon was a game, a joke. Or perhaps it wasn’t. This is because the little schlemiel of a Manhattan Jew was thinking about acceptance and being accepted. About the dilemma of assimilation. Our hero is a lightning-fast shapeshifter who takes on the form, mannerisms, and language of the members of society around him, regardless of the environment. There you go, it’s that easy! Who wouldn’t accept someone who is just like themselves? Right, but who is the real Leonard Zelig if he is always being someone else? This remains a damned tricky question even today. We don’t even have to be little Manhattan Jews to get lost in the forest of our useful and profitable ways of doing things in the 21st-century world of ‘compliance’. It could be that it is no easier today to say who we are, who we belong to, and why we are loved than it was then. If at all…

A 2024 nyarán 83. életévét betöltő Riccardo Muti zeneszerzéstanárától, Nino Rotától, Fellini, Visconti és Zeffirelli filmjeinek legendás zeneszerzőjétől kapott fiatalon meghatározó támogatást. Jelenlegi zenekara, a Chicagói Szimfonikusok élén izgalmas műsort vezényel a Müpában: az est programján Philip Glass új műve a kortárs zene népszerű ágát képviseli, Mendelssohn és Richard Strauss egy-egy alkotása pedig a német zenének azt a fejezetét, amely olaszos színeivel és vérmérsékletével hódít.

A Chicagói Szimfonikus Zenekar 1891 óta működik, főzeneigazgatói között olyan muzsikusokat találunk, mint Rafael Kubelík, Reiner Frigyes, Solti György, Daniel Barenboim, Bernard Haitink. Frigyes német-római császár 13. századi vára, melynek architektúrája csupa mágikus szimbólum, a nyolcas szám jegyében. Mendelssohn és Richard Strauss két különböző korszak német zenéjét képviseli, most felhangzó műveiknek azonban közös tulajdonságuk, hogy mind az Olasz szimfónia, mind az Itáliából (Aus Italien) úti élmények igézetében keletkezett, és az olasz tájak varázsát, az olasz nép temperamentumát, életszeretetét hivatott hangokban megjeleníteni.

Who was the mentor of one of the greatest conductors of our time? Riccardo Muti, who turns 83 in the summer of 2024, received crucial support at a young age from his composition teacher, Nino Rota, the legendary composer of soundtracks to films by Fellini, Visconti and Zeffirelli. For this evening’s concert at Müpa Budapest, he is taking the podium with his current orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, to conduct an exciting programme consisting of a new work by Philip Glass, representing a popular branch of contemporary music, along with a piece each by Mendelssohn and Richard Strauss from the chapter of German music dominated by the colours and temperament of Italy.

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has been operating since 1891 under such chief music directors as Rafael Kubelík, Fritz Reiner, Georg Solti, Daniel Barenboim and Bernard Haitink. (The orchestra’s two performances at the then recently inaugurated Müpa Budapest in 2005, conducted by Pierre Boulez and Daniel Barenboim, were unforgettable ones.) Riccardo Muti has helmed the Chicagoans since 2010. While one of the most significant chapters in the versatile conductor’s career was connected to Milan and La Scala, he also maintains an equally fruitful relationship with the largest orchestras in Europe and America, from Berlin and Vienna to Philadelphia and New York. One of the most successful creative figures in 20th- and 21st-century American music, Philip Glass has for six decades been composing works of the repetitive/minimalist school that have drawn great interest in every genre, from solo piano works to operas. The work of his being performed now is titled The Triumph of the Octagon. The composer took inspiration from Castel del Monte in the Puglia region of southern Italy, not far from the city of Andria. The architecture of this 13th-century castle built by the German-Roman emperor Frederick II is full of magical symbols reflecting the properties of the number eight. Although Mendelssohn and Richard Strauss represent the German music of two different eras, their works on this programme share a common feature: both the Italian symphony and Aus Italien were created under the spell of their composer’s travel experiences in Italy. What is more, they both evoke the magic of Italian landscapes and the temperament and lust for life of the Italian people through their melodies.

A classic opera and one of the most beloved productions in the Met Live in HD series comes to life with a fresh, strong concept and a captivating new Carmen in the spotlight. In a production directed by Carrie Cracknell and conducted by Daniele Rustioni, the title role is taken by the young Russian mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina, while Don José is portrayed by the Polish tenor Piotr Beczała, one of the favourites of the Met’s audiences in New York and around the world.

Met is set to bring a new rendition of Carmen that promises an unsparingly honest retelling of the well-known story, set in the present day. Despite this, the Met’s renowned English director remains faithful to Georges Bizet’s opera, as evidenced by the prominent and definitive roles of violence and rebellion against social constraints in the production. Since 1884, Carmen has been performed over a thousand times in New York, and it is now set to grace the Met HD Live program for the fourth time. As expected, this production promises a superb display of music and vocal artistry. The assurance of musical excellence is upheld by none other than the electrifying Italian conductor, Daniele Rustioni, who has been a constant highlight at the Metropolitan since 2017. Despite being only twenty-seven, Akhmetshina has already gained worldwide acclaim for her performance as Carmen, and now she is joined by the ever-motivated Beczała and one of the star sopranos of the opera house, Angel Blue, who will take on the role of Micaëla, while Kyle Ketelsen, the American bass-baritone known from the Live in HD broadcast of last season’s highly successful contemporary world premiere, The Hours, will be portraying the remarkable character of Escamillo.

A magyar népzenét 2008 óta ünneplő gálasorozatban ezúttal Sebestyén Márta koncertje egyesíti a színtér számos szereplőjét. Mindezt úgy, hogy a hetvenes évek óta aktív, legendás énekesnő ezúttal már pályatársai gyermekeivel, a magyar táncházmozgalom sokadik generációjával lép színpadra, bizonyítva, hogy „a népzene szeretete nem múló szeszély”. Az Erdőfű Zenekar, a Söndörgő és a Szerényi Béla és fiai tekerőzenekara mellett itt lesz a Magyarpalatkai Banda, Írországból Andy Irvine és Donal Lunny, valamint számos további vendég. Igazi népzenei ünnep várható.

Sebestyén Márta így foglalja össze az este felépítését: „A koncepció az, hogy a mögöttem lévő évtizedek alatt felnőtt egy nemzedék, amelynek sikerült ugyanúgy »megfertőződnie« a népzenével, mint annak idején nekem, amikor Halmos Béla és Sebő Feri felkaroltak. […] Kollégáim felserdült tehetséges zenészgyerekeit kértem fel – néhány korombéli mellett – hogy muzsikáljanak velem.” Az Erdőfűben Éri Péter két gyermeke a nyilvánvaló kapcsolódási pont, akikkel magyar népzenei blokkot adnak elő. De lesz itt minden, amiről még híres Sebestyén Márta: régizene Andrejszki Judittal és Szabó Zsolt viola da gamba-művésszel, rockopera-részletek Szamosi Szabolcs orgonaművész közreműködésével. A Szent Efrém Férfikarral például Cseh Tamás-átirat hangzik el, továbbá lesz még izgalmas világzenei és táncos produkció Bittner Meenakshi Dóra táncművésszel, jönnek a magyarpalatkaiak és az ír barátok (Andy Irvine és Donal Lunny) is. „My heart is playing…”
A Celebration of Folk Music – concert by Márta Sebestyén

In this iteration of the gala series celebrating Hungarian folk music since 2008, it will be a concert by Márta Sebestyén that brings together many of the players from the scene. This time the legendary singer, active since the ’70s, will take the stage with the children of her colleagues, the umpteenth generation of the Hungarian dance house movement, proving that „the love of folk music is no passing fancy.” In addition to the Erdőfű Band, Söndörgő and the Béla Szerényi and Sons Hurdy-Gurdy Band, we will also get to hear the Palatka Gypsy Band and, hailing from Ireland, Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny, along with many other guests. We can look forward to a true folk music festival.

As Márta Sebestyén sums up the line-up for the evening: „The concept is to showcase a generation that grew up during the decades after I did and which managed to grow ‘addicted’ to folk music in the same way I did when Béla Halmos and Feri Sebő embraced me. […] I asked my colleagues’ talented teenage musician children – along with some of my own contemporaries – to come and make music with me.” From Erdőfű, the obvious point of connection is Péter Éri’s two children, with whom she will perform a block of Hungarian folk music. The songstress has likewise known the members of Söndörgő since they were born, and will do some Greek, Bulgarian and Serbian tunes with them. But there will be plenty of everything else that Márta Sebestyén remains famous for too, including early music with Judit Andrejszki and viola da gamba player Zsolt Szabó and rock opera excerpts with organist Szabolcs Szamosi. Alongside the Saint Ephraim Male Choir, as another example, she will perform an arrangement of music by Tamás Cseh, and there will also be an exciting world music and dance production with dancer Dóra Bittner Meenakshi, with the members of the Palatka Gypsy Band and her Irish friends Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny also coming for the show. It will be gala of the very best.

Olyan egyszerű kis filmnek tűnik. Keserédes történetecske a ’30-as évek Amerikájából, amely még mindig nem tápászkodott fel a válságból. Nincsenek benne súlyos mondatok életről, halálról vagy a világegyetem tágulásáról. Miért is lennének? A rendező ez alkalommal nem osztott magára szerepet. Így aztán le kell mondanunk azokról a pillanatokról, amikor Woody Allen a kamerába – értsd: a néző szemébe – néz, és valami bölcsességgel vagy viccel megtekeri az elménket. Nyugalom, a szembenézés azért nem marad el.

Ebben a történetben egy filmszereplő lejön a mozivászonról, a vásznon maradt többiek pedig tanácstalanságuk közepette megszólítják a nézőket. Bennünket. És innen kezdve már nem is olyan egyszerű film ez.
Ha összeállítanánk egy sorozatot olyan filmekből, amelyek azt a kérdést vizsgálják, miként is működik a film, a mozi, a Kairó bíbor rózsája semmiképp sem maradhatna ki belőle. (Woody Allen igazán jó társaságban lenne Truffaut, Fellini, Tornatore, Tarantino és mások mellett.) A színes filmben pergő fekete-fehér film ördögien bonyolult kérdéseket vet fel. Például azt, hogy mi, nézők mennyire vagyunk benne a történetben, hogy a film által a fejünkben elindított sztorit hogyan bonyolítjuk tovább. Vagy hogy milyen a mozivászon valósága? Számon kérhetjük-e egyáltalán a filmen a valóságot? Furcsa módon ez utóbbi kérdés napjainkban éles, sőt cenzurális kérdéssé fajult. (A vetítés után természetesen megvitathatjuk, miért is bánik Woody Allen ilyen méltatlanul a nem fehér karakterekkel.) Meg aztán rágódhatnánk azon is, hogy a film a nézők álmaiból építkezik-e vagy maga teremti az álmokat, amelyeket mi, a közönség keltünk életre. És hogy mi is történne, ha beléphetnénk kedves műveink világába, ahogyan Woody Allen egyik hőse teszi a Kugelmass-epizód című írásában.

It seems like such a simple little film. A bittersweet story from a 1930s America that is still yet to recover from the Great Depression. It brings us no serious commentary about life, death or the expansion of the universe. Why would it? The director did not assign himself a role this time around. And so we have to go without any of those moments when Woody Allen looks into the camera — meaning into the viewer’s eyes — and blows our minds with some piece of wisdom or a joke. But don’t worry: there is still direct interaction.

In this story, a character in a film descends from the cinema screen, leaving the other protagonists to address the audience in their bewilderment. That is, to address us. And from here on out, it is no longer such a simple movie.
If we were to put together a series of films that examine the question of how film and cinema work, the Purple Rose of Cairo would definitely be included. (Woody Allen would be in truly great company alongside Truffaut, Fellini, Tornatore, Tarantino and others.) The black-and-white film rolling within a colour film raises diabolically complicated questions. For example, the extent to which we, the viewers, are involved in the story, and how we further complicate the story begun in our heads by the film. Or what is the reality of the cinema screen? Can we expect film to be faithful to reality at all? Strangely enough, this latter question has turned into a sharp, even censorious, question these days. (After the screening, of course, we can discuss why Woody Allen treats the non-white characters so disrespectfully.) And then we could also chew over whether the film is constructed around the dreams of the viewers or if it instead creates the dreams that we, the audience, bring to life. Along with the question of what would happen if we could enter the world of our beloved works, as one of Woody Allen’s heroes does in the Kugelmass episode.

Az Aurevoir. nyolc éve szinte a semmiből került a fesztiválok nagyszínpadaira, népzenében gyökerező, annak dallami és szöveges hagyományait rockos-alternatív hangzásba ültető egyedi dalaival hódította meg a közönséget. Ethno-beatként definiált zenéjükben koncepciózusan van jelen a sokszínűség: a magyar, cigány, ír és délszláv népzene motívumai és a hatvanas évek beatje mellett a francia kávéházi sanzonok világa és a reneszánsz, barokk zene is ott lapul. Az eddigi sikertörténet és a folyamatos fejlődés következő zenei állomása egy szimfonikus koncert a Szolnoki Szimfonikus Zenekar társaságában.

A szimfonikus koncert zenei vezetője az Aurevoir. szaxofonosa, Cseke Dániel, aki 2022-ben diplomázott a Liszt Ferenc Zeneművészeti Egyetem jazz tanszékén. Az ő személye egyfajta kapocs a zenekar és a másféle stílusok között, ezúttal pedig új szintre emeli az Aurevoir.-dalokat. A „hangos” fesztiválkoncertekkel szemben itt nem a ritmusok dominálnak majd, hanem a dallamoké a főszerep: a népzenei hagyományok klasszikus zenei hangszereléssel megtámogatva új dimenziókat kapnak. A szimfonikus koncert társhangszerelője Kováts Gergő, aki nagyzenekari hangszerelési képességeit legutóbb a NART Orchestra, és a Fővárosi Rapcirkusz produkcióiban csillogtatta meg, de korábban dolgozott a BDZ Quartettel, a Tárkány Művekkel vagy az Uljana Quartettel is. A népzenével ápolt különleges kapcsolatát már egyetemi éveiben megszilárdította – Juhász Zoltántól furulyázni, Csávás Attilától tárogatózni tanult. Korábbi munkái során alakította ki egyedi hangját, amely mégis organikusan kapcsolódik a szerteágazóan gazdag hagyományhoz.

Eight years ago, Aurevoir. started to appear on the main stages of festivals almost out of nowhere, conquering audiences with their unique songs rooted in folk music but incorporating its melodic and lyrical traditions into an alternative rock sound. Conceptually present in their music, defined as ethno-beat, is diversity: in addition to the motifs of Hungarian, Gypsy, Irish and South Slavic folk music and ’60s beat style, it also includes the world of French café chansons and Renaissance and Baroque music. The next musical stage of this success story and continuous development is a symphonic concert with the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra.

The musical director of this symphonic concert is Aurevoir. saxophonist Dániel Cseke, who graduated from the Liszt Academy with a degree in jazz in 2022. His constitutes a kind of link between the band and the other styles, this time elevating the songs of Aurevoir. to an entirely new level. At the centre here, in contrast to the rhythms that dominates at ‘loud’ festival concerts, will be melodies, with folk music traditions taking on new dimensions supported by classical musical arrangements. The co-arranger for the symphonic concert is Gergő Kováts, who recently demonstrated his full-orchestral scoring skills in productions of the NART Orchestra and the Budapest Rap Circus, and also previously worked with the BDZ Quartet, Tárkány Művek and the Uljana Quartet. He had already solidified his special relationship with folk music in his university years – learning to play flute from Zoltán Juhász and guitar from Attila Csávás. Through his previous work, he developed a personal voice that is nevertheless integrally connected to the diverse and rich tradition.

Oláh Ibolya nagy visszatérése, A Dal című televíziós zenés műsor 2022-es évadában aratott győzelme Nem adom el című szerzeményével új időszámítást jelent az énekesnő karrierjében. Éppen húsz éve, a 2003-as Megasztár tehetségkutatóban tűnt fel a ritka mélységű, karcos hangú előadó, a zenés vetélkedő második helyezettje, majd gyorsan nagy népszerűségű énekes lett. Most Gyere közelebb című 2023-as albumával lép fel a Müpában.

Oláh Ibolya autodidaktaként merült el a zene világában, ösztönös tehetsége pedig hamar megmutatkozott: a 21. század első nagy hazai tévés-zenés tehetségkutatójában ő volt a műsor egyik sztárja. Mi sem bizonyítja ezt jobban, mint hogy a Presser Gábor-Sztevanovity Dusán szerzőpáros írta 2004-es bemutatkozó lemezének egy részét, a másik felét pedig Novák Péter. Második albumáról a Magyarország lett egyik legnagyobb slágere, de a sikerek később sem kerülték el a színházi és filmes szerepekben is bemutatkozó előadót. Kortárs költők versmegzenésítéseit követően A Dal 2022 megnyerése jelentette a következő mérföldkövet, amely után újult erővel érkeztek a friss zenék – még abban az évben az ötödik nagylemez (Nem adom el) Födő Sándor zeneszerző és Hegyi György, valamint Csakmag Vivien szövegírók dalaival, melyeket az énekesnő számára írtak. A sikeres recepten nem változtatva szintén ezzel a trióval készült a 2023-as album (Gyere közelebb) gitáralapú zenével. Erre a koncertre Oláh Ibolya saját zenekarával érkezik, ezúttal is a tőle megszokott őszinteséggel, zenei mélységgel – és Lábas Viki vendégszereplésével, aki az új lemez címadó dalában duettpartnere. Kettejük előadása igazi kuriózum, mivel most először éneklik el a dalt élőben.

Ibolya Oláh’s big comeback, her victory in the 2022 season of the television music show A Dal (‘The Song’) with her composition Nem adom el (‘It is Not For Sale’), marks a new milestone in the singer’s career. It was exactly twenty years ago, on the 2003 Megasztár talent show, that this raspy-voiced artist of rare profundity finished second in the music competition and then quickly gained great popularity as a singer. Now she is coming to Müpa Budapest to perform her 2023 album Gyere közelebb (‘Come Closer’).

Ibolya Oláh dove into the music world as a self-taught artist, and her instinctive talent soon revealed itself, making her one of the stars of the first major Hungarian TV musical talent shows of the 21st century. There exists no better proof of this than the fact that it was the songwriting duo of Gábor Presser and Dusán Sztevanovity who would go on to write part of the material for her 2004 debut album, with Péter Novák supplying the other half. After her song Magyarország (‘Hungary’) from her second album turned into one of her biggest hits, she continued to enjoy entertainment success in theatre and film roles. After setting verses by contemporary poets to music, the next milestone was winning A Dal 2022, whereupon fresh music began to arrive with renewed force. Coming out later that same year was her fifth LP (Nem adom el), with songs written for her by composer Sándor Födő and lyricists György Hegyi and Vivien Csakmag. The recipe proved successful, and it would be the same trio that generated the guitar-based music for 2023’s Gyere közelebb. Oláh is bringing her own band to this concert, along with the sincerity and musical depth we have come to expect from her. Making a guest appearance will be Viki Lábas, her duet partner in the title song of the new album. This pairing on stage promises to be an interesting one, as this will be their first time singing the song live.

Színházat kínálunk. De tánccal kiegészülő zenés színházi játékunkban egy szokványos színházi előadásnál jóval nagyobb hangsúlyt kap a zene.

Mozart életművének hatalmas palettájáról nagyon sokféle műfajból választottunk részleteket. Megszólalnak szimfóniák, divertimentók, mise, szerenád, különböző hangszerekre írt versenyművek, orgonafantázia és természetesen több operarészlet is. A zeneművek egyes színekben a szöveg alatt csendülnek fel, és a drámai szituációt hivatottak alátámasztani, némely darab saját jogán kerül előtérbe, vagy éppen Bozsik Yvette koreográfiájához ad alapot bizonyos jelenetekben – hiszen a produkciónak fontos eleme lesz a tánc, a mozgás is. A zenekarhoz hasonlóan szintén idén harmincéves Bozsik Yvette Társulat művészei alakítják a főszereplők körül sürgölődő inasokat, szobalányokat, akik az urak és úrhölgyek minden titkát ismerik. A Budafoki Dohnányi Zenekar állandó alkotópartnere, Árva Nóra a tőle megszokott ízléssel és arányérzékkel teremti meg díszletei és jelmezei által azt a sajátosan mai rokokó miliőt, amelyben a szereplők léteznek. A BDZ maga adja a teljes, élő zenei alapot Guido Mancusi vezényletével. Mindazonáltal a produkció sikerének záloga, hogy a hazai színjátszás néhány igazán kiemelkedő művésze jeleníti meg a Choderlos de Laclos által megálmodott, izgalmas és összetett karaktereket. Bakos-Kiss Gábor rendezése ezt a rendkívül sokrétű alapanyagot építi fel úgy, ahogy ez a sokak által jól ismert történet még soha nem került színre.

What we are offering here is theatre. But in this dramatic musical theatre production supplemented by dance, there is much more emphasis on the music than in a standard theatrical performance.

We have selected excerpts from a wide variety of genres from the vast palette of Mozart’s oeuvre. Symphonies, divertimentos, masses, serenades, concertos for various instruments, organ fantasies and, of course, several opera excerpts. The pieces of music are played to add certain colours under the text and are intended to support the various dramatic situations, with some of them emerging into the foreground in their own right or even providing the basis for Yvette Bozsik’s choreography in certain scenes – since dance and movement will also be important elements of the production. The artists of the Yvette Bozsik Company, which, like the orchestra, is also turning 30 this year, play the butlers and maids who rush around the protagonists and know all the secrets those gentlemen and ladies are keeping. Nóra Árva, a regular creative partner of the Budafok Dohnanyi Orchestra, is using her usual taste and sense of proportion to create the sets and costumes that make up the distinctively modern rococo milieu in which the characters exist. Playing under the baton of Guido Mancusi, the BDO will provide the entire live musical foundation. The key factor that promises to make the production a success, however, is the casting of some of the most outstanding artists from the Hungarian theatre world to portray the exciting and complex characters dreamed up by Choderlos de Laclos. The directing by Gábor Bakos-Kiss builds up this extremely diverse material in a way in which this familiar story has never been staged before.

Olyan egyszerű kis filmnek tűnik. Keserédes történetecske a ’30-as évek Amerikájából, amely még mindig nem tápászkodott fel a válságból. Nincsenek benne súlyos mondatok életről, halálról vagy a világegyetem tágulásáról. Miért is lennének? A rendező ez alkalommal nem osztott magára szerepet. Így aztán le kell mondanunk azokról a pillanatokról, amikor Woody Allen a kamerába – értsd: a néző szemébe – néz, és valami bölcsességgel vagy viccel megtekeri az elménket. Nyugalom, a szembenézés azért nem marad el.

Ebben a történetben egy filmszereplő lejön a mozivászonról, a vásznon maradt többiek pedig tanácstalanságuk közepette megszólítják a nézőket. Bennünket. És innen kezdve már nem is olyan egyszerű film ez.
Ha összeállítanánk egy sorozatot olyan filmekből, amelyek azt a kérdést vizsgálják, miként is működik a film, a mozi, a Kairó bíbor rózsája semmiképp sem maradhatna ki belőle. (Woody Allen igazán jó társaságban lenne Truffaut, Fellini, Tornatore, Tarantino és mások mellett.) A színes filmben pergő fekete-fehér film ördögien bonyolult kérdéseket vet fel. Például azt, hogy mi, nézők mennyire vagyunk benne a történetben, hogy a film által a fejünkben elindított sztorit hogyan bonyolítjuk tovább. Vagy hogy milyen a mozivászon valósága? Számon kérhetjük-e egyáltalán a filmen a valóságot? Furcsa módon ez utóbbi kérdés napjainkban éles, sőt cenzurális kérdéssé fajult. (A vetítés után természetesen megvitathatjuk, miért is bánik Woody Allen ilyen méltatlanul a nem fehér karakterekkel.) Meg aztán rágódhatnánk azon is, hogy a film a nézők álmaiból építkezik-e vagy maga teremti az álmokat, amelyeket mi, a közönség keltünk életre. És hogy mi is történne, ha beléphetnénk kedves műveink világába, ahogyan Woody Allen egyik hőse teszi a Kugelmass-epizód című írásában.

It seems like such a simple little film. A bittersweet story from a 1930s America that is still yet to recover from the Great Depression. It brings us no serious commentary about life, death or the expansion of the universe. Why would it? The director did not assign himself a role this time around. And so we have to go without any of those moments when Woody Allen looks into the camera — meaning into the viewer’s eyes — and blows our minds with some piece of wisdom or a joke. But don’t worry: there is still direct interaction.

In this story, a character in a film descends from the cinema screen, leaving the other protagonists to address the audience in their bewilderment. That is, to address us. And from here on out, it is no longer such a simple movie.
If we were to put together a series of films that examine the question of how film and cinema work, the Purple Rose of Cairo would definitely be included. (Woody Allen would be in truly great company alongside Truffaut, Fellini, Tornatore, Tarantino and others.) The black-and-white film rolling within a colour film raises diabolically complicated questions. For example, the extent to which we, the viewers, are involved in the story, and how we further complicate the story begun in our heads by the film. Or what is the reality of the cinema screen? Can we expect film to be faithful to reality at all? Strangely enough, this latter question has turned into a sharp, even censorious, question these days. (After the screening, of course, we can discuss why Woody Allen treats the non-white characters so disrespectfully.) And then we could also chew over whether the film is constructed around the dreams of the viewers or if it instead creates the dreams that we, the audience, bring to life. Along with the question of what would happen if we could enter the world of our beloved works, as one of Woody Allen’s heroes does in the Kugelmass episode.

Tompa Andrea legutóbbi, ötödik regénye nemcsak az év egyik legjobb című regénye, de igazi, súlyos nagyregény – és nem a hossza miatt. Erdély történetének megrázó, kevéssé ismert eseményei, emberi sorskérdések, drámák, mély, felkavaró érzések és gondolatok, izgalmas történet: nem véletlen, hogy a könyv hatalmas sikert aratott, s hogy népszerűsége azóta is töretlen.

A Sokszor nem halunk meg tehát nem azért nagyregény, mert hatszáz oldalas, hanem mert felvetései egyetemesek: korántsem csak holokauszt- vagy diktatúraregény, de a valaha volt egyik legszebb mű az örökbefogadásról. Tompa Andrea egyik legfontosabb módszere a szövegben a némaság, az elhallgatás; a Sokszor nem halunk meg a hiányok könyve. A történet szintjén a biológiai szülők hiányáé, a kolozsvári, erdélyi zsidóké, a történelmi igazságosságé. Tompa úgy formálja, úgy hajlítja kedvére a nyelvet, ahogyan a filmesek képi eszközökkel tudják szolgálni a hangulatot, egy fullasztó szituációét például szűk szobákban felvett közelikkel. Tompának mindezt a nyelvvel kell megteremtenie, és csodálatos végigkövetni, mennyire jól sikerül neki: a hiány nemcsak a történetben lesz ott, de a mondatok mögött is, a felszín leírásaiban, ami mögött sosem egyértelműen megválaszolható kérdésként mindig ott a mélység, a meg nem magyarázott tettekben, a szavakkal ki nem fejtett dacban. Andrea Tompa’s most recent novel, her fifth, not only has one of the best titles of the year, it is also a true, weighty Hungarian novel – and not because of its length. This Transylvannian story is a thrilling tale of moving, obscure events, questions of human fate and drama, and disturbing thoughts and sentiments. It is no surprise that the book was a huge hit, and that it its popularity remains undimmed today.

So it is not its 600 pages that make Sokszor nem halunk meg (Often, We Do Not Die) a great book, it is because its observations are universal – even if it is far from a holocaust or dictatorship-themed novel – instead, it is one of the most beautiful works of art about adoption in existence. One of Andrea Tompa’s most important techniques in her prose is silence, suppression; Often, We Do Not Die is a book of absence. A story about the absence of biological parents, the absence of Transylvannian Jews, and the absence of historical justice. Tompa forms and bends the language to her will. Just as filmmakers employ visual devices to create a mood, she evokes, for example, the sense of suffocation by describing cramped rooms filled with pseudo-relatives. Tompa must create all this with language itself, and it is a marvel to observe how adeptly she succeeds in doing so. Absence is not only present in the story itself, but between the lines, and in the surface descriptions, behind which, as a question that can never clearly be answered, the depths are always present, as are the still-unexplained deeds, and the antagonism that remains unexpressed in words. And in the lives that are yet to be filled with life. A weighty book, full of expressive silences, and a weighty literary evening that awaits us at the Glass Hall of Müpa Budapest.

Csak a szeretet: az egyetlen és ősi, időn és téren átívelő, mindannyiunkat összekötő energiáról beszél Magyarország első számú újcirkusz-társulata, a Recirquel új produkciója. A Vági Bence művészeti vezető rendezte Solus Amor a társulattal való többéves közös munka során megteremtett „cirque danse” nyelvén megszólaló monumentális előadás korunk természet és csoda iránti vágyódásából meríti erejét.

Néhány évvel ezelőtt Budapesten született meg az új műfaj: Vági Bence és világjáró újcirkusz-társulata, a Recirquel munkáit külföldi kritikusok sorolták be először a cirque danse általuk feltalált zsánerébe. Az újcirkusz, a klasszikus és a modern tánc találkozása hibrid elegyet hoz létre a színpadon: az akrobatika a káprázatot és az ámulatba ejtést szolgálja, a tánc lehetőséget ad az önkifejezésre, a finomabb jelentésárnyalatok közvetítésére és a történetmesélésre. A Non Solus és a My Land nemzetközi sikere után a trilógia harmadik pillére a Solus Amor, amely az univerzumot összetartó érzésről, a szeretetről mesél. A szeretetmise zeneszerzője Szirtes Edina, a különleges látvány és az egyedi hangzásvilág megteremtését létrehozó csapatban együttműködött Terjék Gábor sound designer, Klimó Péter, aki a bámulatos díszletet jegyzi, és Kasza Emese jelmeztervező. Love is all there is: The latest production by Recirquel Budapest, Hungary’s leading contemporary circus company, brings forth the only primeval energy that spans space and time to connect us all. Directed by artistic director Bence Vági, Solus Amor employs „cirque danse”, a genre created with and by the company over the course of several years, in a monumental production drawing its power from our contemporary yearning for nature and wonderment.

A few years ago, a new genre was born here in Budapest: foreign critics were the first to dub this novel art form „cirque danse” as created by Bence Vági and his globetrotting circus company. Contemporary circus fused with traditional and modern dance brings this hybrid genre to the stage: acrobatics inspire amazement and awe, while dance facilitates self-expression, relays the subtler shades of meaning and tells a story. Following the international success of Non Solus and My Land, Solus Amor completes the trilogy by telling the story of the emotion that binds our universe, love. The music for this celebration of love was composed by Edina Szirtes. Behind the extraordinary visuals and unique sound effects lies the creative team of Gábor Terjék, sound designer, Péter Klimó, who designed the awe-inspiring set, and costume designer Emese Kasza. The performance’s special ‘guest star’ is a bear constructed by the world-renowned South African puppeteer Janni Younge. Under Bence Vági’s direction, the acrobats and dancers move together to bring this colossal being to life.

És pontosan ezt teszi tánccal, zenével, játékkal a Magyar Nemzeti Táncegyüttes új előadása is.

A Müpában az évad együttese a Zsuráfszky Zoltán Kossuth-díjas táncművész, koreográfus, a Nemzet Művésze által vezetett Magyar Nemzeti Táncegyüttes, amely új premierjével a farsang féktelen, jókedvű mulatozásába enged bepillantást. „If a person has a good friend, a good acquaintance, he invites them over, shutting out his sorrows and worries at the door for this brief period, and uncorks his wine. ‘Let it flow’, goes the lament he releases into the wind, ‘Let it run dry; since the carnival is short anyway, and the fast is long: why not be merry when we can?” This is how, with his usual perceptiveness, the great Hungarian writer Mór Jókai captured the essence of the period between the Epiphany and Ash Wednesday in folk culture. And this is exactly the same thing that the new production from the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble is doing, with dancing, music and drama.

This new premiere from the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, Müpa Budapest’s ensemble of the season led by Kossuth Prize-winning dancer and choreographer and Artist of the Nation Zoltán Zsuráfszky, offers a glimpse into the unbridled and cheerful fun of the carnival. Reflected in each other in this large-scale work by director/choreographer Zoltán Zsuráfszky and associate director/choreographer Zsuzsa Zs. Vincze are both the old and the new, the archaic and the modern, in a show proving that the centuries-old folk customs have not lost one bit of their power. Because it doesn’t matter whether we live in a village or a city: we all bury the winter in the same way and call out as one for the long-awaited spring. The carnival, held over the last three days of the pre-Lenten period, was the highlight of the entire season, with non-stop dancing and festivities taking place all across the countryside. The world would have seemed like it had been turned upside down, taken over by merry debauchery, loving mockery and imaginative parody. The young team of the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble evokes the cheerful and inimitable doughnut-scented atmosphere of the carnival with virtuoso dances, a complex musical world and vibrant spectacle. And as viewers both young and old alike watch the dances in amazement, we can all join together in hoping that the harsh winter will finally pass, giving way at last for the brightness of a green dawn.

Akik emlékeznek Béla Fleck előző, nyolc évvel ezelőtti koncertjére, bizonyára azt is tudják, miért hívják Bélának az Amerikában született bendzsójátékost. Nem magyar családi gyökerek okán: az egyébként szlovák ősöktől származó muzsikus zenerajongó édesapja Bartók miatt adta fiának ezt a keresztnevet, amely determinálta Béla Fleck életét. De nemcsak amolyan átlagos zenész lett belőle, hanem egyenesen az a bendzsó-zseni, akit a világon a legtöbb kategóriában jelöltek Grammy-díjra. Ezúttal egy igazi allstars bluegrass együttes élén tér vissza Budapestre.

Az 1958-as születésű Fleck hangszerének igazi virtuóza, aki mindig innovatív módon, technikailag is tökéletes játékkal keresi az új és még újabb lehetőségeket a bendzsó megszólaltatásában, valamint más műfajokkal való házasságában. Utóbbiban társa felesége, Abigail Washburn is, akivel legutóbb, 2015-ben láthattuk-hallhattuk a Müpában. Korábban viszont még Béla Fleck And The Flecktones nevű zenekarával érkezett, a jazzfúzió és a jammelések felé terelve a progresszív bluegrasst. Mielőtt 1988-ban megalapította leghíresebb formációját, hosszú évekig a prog bluegrass egyik alapzenekarával, a New Grass Revivallal zenélt. Nála azonban idővel valóban bármi szóba jöhetett, igen tekintélyes számú, 38 Grammy-jelölése (amelyből 15-öt díjra is váltott) rengetegféle kategóriából áll össze: country, pop, jazz, bluegrass, klasszikus, folk, spoken word, világzene, american roots stb. Mostani koncertjén a 2021-ben megjelent, szintén Grammy-díjas My Bluegrass Heart című lemezét mutatja be, olyan nagynevű bluegrass-zenésztársakkal, akik még alighanem sosem jártak Magyarországon.

Those who remember Béla Fleck’s previous concert eight years ago probably know how the American-born banjo player got to be named Béla. It’s not because of any Hungarian family roots: his father, a musician of Slovak ancestry, named him after Bartók, an act that set Fleck’s life on its path. However, he would then proceed to become more than just an average musician, but rather the genius of the banjo who has been nominated for Grammy awards in more categories than anyone else in the world. This time around, he returns to Budapest at the head of a genuine all-star bluegrass ensemble.

Born in 1958, Fleck is a true virtuoso of his instrument, one who is always looking for new and even newer innovative and technically flawless ways to play the banjo, including in its marriage with other genres. His partner in the latter regard is his own wife, Abigail Washburn, whom we last got to see and hear with him at Müpa Budapest in 2015. Previously, however, he visited together with his group Béla Fleck And The Flecktones, whose sound takes progressive bluegrass in the direction of jazz fusion and jam music. Prior to founding his most famous line-up in 1988, he played for many years with one of the core bands of prog bluegrass, New Grass Revival. Over time, though, he grew capable of really anything. His impressive haul of 38 Grammy nominations (15 of which resulted in winning the award) have come in many different categories: country, pop, jazz, bluegrass, classical, folk, spoken word, world music, American roots, and others. At his current concert, he will present his Grammy-winning album My Bluegrass Heart, released in 2021, with fellow bluegrass musicians who have most likely never been to Hungary.

Gyémánt Bálint a rendezvény nyitókoncertjén fényesen bizonyítja majd, hogy új szólólemezével, a Vortex of Silence-szel ő lehet az egyik legígéretesebb művésze a német Jazzhaus Recordsnak. Harcsa Veronika állandó alkotó- és szerzőtársának zenei vízióját Bartók Vince és Szabó Dániel Ferenc páratlan játéka teszi teljessé, élőben is.

Gyémánt Bálint gitárművész új szólólemezén zenei elképzelései, átütő és megragadó dallamai új rétegeket kapnak, egységbe kovácsolódva váltják egymást romantikus akusztikus gitár- és pszichedelikus rockzenei témák. A Vortex of Silence a freiburgi független Jazzhaus Records gondozásában lép ki az európai zenepiacra, és rendhagyó módon a már megszokott digitális platformokon kívül valódi, 180 grammos vinyl korong formájában is elérhető lesz a Müpában hallható lemezbemutató koncert után. Az anyag az elmúlt évek személyes történeteinek és emberi kapcsolódásainak lenyomata, amely a hallgatónak is lehetőséget biztosít arra, hogy újraértelmezze a körülötte lévő világ harmóniáját és diszharmóniáját. Egyetlen térbe kerül a csend és a zaj, együtt táncolnak fények és árnyak, hogy végül a pillanatban elmerülve a hallgató a saját történetét élhesse meg azokon keresztül. A gitárművész számára a „csend örvénye” korunk gyakori jelenségének szimbóluma, mellyel egy ponton mindannyiunknak szembe kell néznie. The evening concerts in the Jazz Showcase programme are revealing more and more clearly what kind of future jazz is moving towards today. The stylistic pigeonholes have vanished for good. And Hungary’s most recent crop of performers are integrally linked to the leading trends across Europe. Offering brilliant proof of this at the opening concert of the event will be Bálint Gyémánt, possibly one of the most promising artists signed with the German label Jazzhaus Records, with his new solo album, Vortex of Silence. Regularly partnering with Veronika Harcsa as her co-creator and co-composer, Gyémant also has his own personal musical vision, which is completed by the incomparable playing of Vince Bartók and Dániel Ferenc Szabó, including live on stage.

On his new solo album, the guitarist’s musical ideas and rivetingly penetrating melodies are given new layers, with romantic acoustic guitar sounds and psychedelic rock themes forged together into a single unity. Shepherded into the European music market by the independent Freiburg-based Jazzhaus Records, Vortex of Silence will not only be issued on the usual digital platforms, but will also be available as a physical 180-gramme vinyl disc after the album release concert at Müpa Budapest. The material is an imprint of personal stories and human relationships from recent years, offering listeners too the opportunity to reinterpret the harmonies and disharmonies of the world around them. Juxtaposed in the same space are silence and noise, with lights and shadows dancing together to allow listeners, immersed in the moment, to experience their own story through them. For the guitarist, the ‘vortex of silence’ is a symbol of a common phenomenon of our times, one that we all have to face at some point. This album can serve both as a focal point and as a reminder for us to have the courage to stand up for each other and be a voice for the voiceless.

Ezek az őskövületek igazán frissek. 2020 óta gyűjtik rajongótáborukat, bár a New Fossils tagjai fiatal koruk ellenére már külön-külön is jó ideje kapnak elismeréseket. Így együtt az izlandi ADHD zenekart is lenyűgözték karakteres, invenciózus, dalközpontú, elektronikával, improvizációkkal fűszerezett zenéjükkel. A New Fossils azonos című bemutatkozó lemeze 2023-ban jelent meg. Erre az estére új szerzemény és Mathias Eick norvég trombitás személyében különleges vendégművész is érkezik.

Az ötösfogatot alkotó muzsikusok számára természetes fejlemény volt, hogy megalakítsák a New Fossilst, annyi közös pontot eredményeztek már korábbi együttműködéseik. A mátrixban szerepel a Dresch Quartet, a Mörk, a MORDÁI, a Deep Glaze vagy a Laiho. És hogy mennyire komolyan, hosszú távra tekintve gondolják az együtt muzsikálást, mutatja, hogy saját kiadót is alapítottak Morotva Records néven. Zenéjük egyértelműen urbánus, elsősorban jazzelemeket tartalmazó, de a pop és az ambient felé is nyitott, akár táncolható muzsika. Ahogy Szabó Dániel Ferenc mondja, „ez a zene jó utazáshoz, álmodozáshoz, felhők nézéséhez vagy barangoláshoz, ugyanakkor nagyon sok apró részletet is tartalmaz, szóval ha figyelsz rá, akkor tele van izgalmas reakciókkal.” Mindezek a momentumok megragadták Mathias Eicket is, akinek a nemzetközi jazzszíntéren betöltött egyre jelentősebb szerepét jól illusztrálja, hogy immár négy albumát adta ki az egyedi művészi értékekre fogékony ECM Records. Eick tagja a Trondheim Jazz Orchestrának és a Jaga Jazzistnek, dolgozott Chick Coreával, Manu Katchéval, Pat Methenyvel, Iro Haarlával, Jacob Younggal és másokkal – nemcsak trombitásként, hanem mint vibrafonos, bőgős, gitáros és zongorista is.

These ancient fossils are decidely fresh. The New Fossils have been building up an army of fans since 2020, and their members have received plenty of individual acclaim, despite their young age. Together, they have wowed the Icelandic group ADHD with their distinctive, inventive, melodic music – with a little electronica and improvisation thrown in. The New Fossils released their eponymous debut album in 2023. For this concert, they come armed with new compositions and a special guest musician in the person of Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick.

Given the many shared points of their previous collaborations, forming the New Fossils was simply a natural progression for the five musicians. Their matrix of connections includes the Dresch Quartet, Mörk, MORDÁI, Deep Glaze and Laiho. And as a sign of how seriously they are taking their shared music-making future, they have even founded their own label, Morotva Records. Their unequivocally urbane music primarily features elements of jazz, though they are also open towards pop music, ambient, and even dance music. As Dániel Ferenc Szabó says, „This is music for a great journey, for daydreaming, staring at the clouds or just wandering around, yet it also contains lots of smaller details – if you pay close enough attention, it is full of exciting reactions.” All of these moments are what captivated Mathias Eick, whose increasingly important role on the international jazz scene is aptly illustrated by the fact that he has now released four albums with ECM Records, a label receptive to unique artistic values. A member of the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra and Jaga Jazzist, Eick has also worked with Chick Corea, Manu Katché, Pat Metheny, Iro Haarla, Jacob Young and others – not only as a trumpet player, but also on vibraphone, double bass, guitar and piano.

Az Orgonapárbaj nagy hagyományú koncertjein a hangszer legkiválóbb művészei vetélkednek játékosan, különböző zenei feladatok rögtönzött megoldásával szórakoztatva a közönséget. Talán éppen a rögtönzés fontossága sugallta az ötletet: miért ne vállalhatná két jazzmuzsikus is a megmérettetést? A lehetőség most valóra válik: két világsztár, a Hammond-orgona két virtuóza, Larry Goldings és John Medeski látogat el hozzánk, ráadásul nem először, hiszen mindketten korábban is nagy sikerrel vendégszerepeltek már a Müpában. Együtt azonban most lépnek fel először a Bartók Béla Nemzeti Hangversenyteremben.

Az ötvenes évtizedének közepén járó Larry Goldings eddigi pályafutása során a műfaj legnagyobb egyéniségeivel játszott. A gitáros Peter Bernsteinnel és a dobos Bill Stewarttal alakított triója végig kísérte pályáját, rendkívüli sikereket aratva. Stúdió- és live session-zenészként a popzenei világ olyan alakjaival dolgozhatott együtt, mint Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Sia, Elton John, Jane Monheit, Eros Ramazzotti vagy Rod Stewart, mindezen kívül számos filmzene is köthető a nevéhez. Nemzedéktársa, John Medeski is igazi nagyágyú: róla a legtöbbeknek a dobos Billy Martinnal és a bőgős-basszusgitáros Chris Wooddal alakított Medeski, Martin & Wood trió jut eszükbe, illetve annak John Scofield gitárossal kvartetté bővült változata. A sorozat tizedik koncertjén – az orgonapárbajok történetében először – két legendás Hammond-orgonista lép fel. Megismerkedhetünk a jazz történetében oly fontos hangszer jellegzetességeivel, felfedezhetjük, hogy a Müpa orgonája mire inspirál két jazzmuzsikust. Külön-külön és együtt is fognak játszani, számíthatunk improvizációs feladatokra, szólókra, de duó- és trióformációk is játszanak Hammond B3 orgonán, nagyorgonán és zongorán. Goldings és Medeski mellett Jake Sherman zongorista emeli az est fényét. Fazekas Gergely zenetörténész társaként az est másik moderátora az a Premecz Mátyás, akit a Hammond-orgona egyik legjobb hazai játékosaként kedvel a Müpa közönsége.

The long-standing Organ Duel concert series brings the top masters of the instrument to compete with each other in playful fashion, entertaining the audience with impromptu solutions to various musical challenges. Perhaps it was the key role of improvisation that prompted the next idea: why not enlist two jazz musicians to go toe to toe? The idea has now become a reality: two international stars, Hammond organ virtuosos Larry Goldings and John Medeski, are coming to visit us, and not for the first time, as both have already made highly acclaimed guest appearances at Müpa Budapest. This occasion, however, will be their first time together at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.

Now in his mid-fifties, Larry Goldings has already played with the leading figures in the jazz world over the course of his career to date. The trio he formed alongside guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart has been a constant in his career, bringing him extraordinary success. As a studio and live session musician, he has had the chance to work with pop music artists like Eric Clapton, John Mayer, Sia, Elton John, Jane Monheit, Eros Ramazzotti and Rod Stewart, in addition to being credited on numerous film soundtracks. His contemporary John Medeski is another true heavy hitter: most people think of him in the context of the Medeski, Martin & Wood trio with drummer Billy Martin and bassist Chris Wood, as well as its expanded quartet version supplemented by guitarist John Scofield. Performing at the tenth concert of the series – for the first time in organ duel history – will be two legendary Hammond organists. Not only will we learn about what makes the Hammond organ so important to the history of jazz, we can also find out what the Müpa Budapest organ inspires two jazz musicians to create. As they play both separately and together, we can count on witnessing them take on improvisational tasks and solos, as well as forming into duos and even trios on the Hammond B3 organ, grand organ and piano, with Jake Sherman adding his lustre to the evening on the latter. Teaming up with musicologist Gergely Fazekas as the other moderator of the evening is Mátyás Premecz, appreciated by the Müpa Budapest audience as one of Hungary’s finest players of the Hammond organ.

Az énekesnő ki is használja ezt a kedvező adottságot, ugyanis felismerte az értéket ősei kultúrkincsében, és abból táplálkozva megjelentette bemutatkozó albumát, a saját gyűjtéseire építő Én Csépem című lemezt. Szigetcsép szerb népzenei hagyományát Branka saját személyes szűrőjén keresztül dolgozta fel, és adja elő zenésztársaival. Az autentikustól az experimentális hangzásig nagy zenei út rajzolódik ki a kiadványt bemutató koncerten.

Básits Branka Én Csépem című lemeze rendkívül sokszínű: a szülőfalujában saját maga által gyűjtött szerb népzenét vette alapul, és dolgozta át zenésztársaival. A szigetcsépi szerb dalokba beépítette zenei tapasztalatait és élményeit, és hosszan, alaposan érlelte az anyagot. „Némely dalokat messzire reptettem, némelyeket fészkükben hagytam. Éveken át dédelgettem ezt a számomra kedves hanganyagot. Elő-elővettem és hallgatgattam. Hagytam, hogy visszhangozzon és formálódjon bennem. Éppen úgy, ahogy a múltban néhány évszázadon átívelve burjánzott a falu lakosainak szívén és száján. Ezek a dalok lenyomatként őrzik a múltat és a falu népének lelki világát, érzéseit, élményeit, és bízom benne, hogy e lemez által tovább közvetíthetik azokat az igazságokat, melyeket örökérvényűvé edzett az idő” – mondja a koncerten is elhangzó dalokról a szerb és magyar ősökkel rendelkező előadó, aki 2017-ben népi énekesként végzett a Zeneakadémián. Mások mellett a Zűrös Banda és a Pravo zenekarokban énekel, valamint a Boban Marković Orkestarral koncertezik. Zenei szabadság és határtalanság vár ránk ezen a koncerten is.

Branka Básits is in the fortunate position of having been born in a village with a rich folk music tradition. And the singer takes advantage of this favorable circumstance: recognising the value of the ancestral cultural heritage that nourished her, she has published her debut album Én Csépem (‘My Csép’), based on her own collections. Branka has reshaped Szigetcsép’s Serbian folk music tradition through her own personal filter and performs it with her fellow musicians. Emerging at this album release concert will be a grand musical journey ranging from authentic sounds to experimental ones.

Branka Básits’s album Én Csépem is an extremely diverse one, based on the Serbian folk music she collected in her native village and reworked with her musician colleagues. After incorporating her own experiences both personal and musical into the Serbian songs from Szigetcsép, she allowed the material to thoroughly mature for a long period of time. „Some of the songs I let fly far away, and others I left in their nest,” is how the performing artist with both Serbian and Hungarian ancestry, and who graduated from the Liszt Academy with a degree in folk music in 2017, described the process of crafting the songs to be heard at the concert. „For years, I have cherished this audio material I love so dearly. I would take it out and listen to it again and again. I allowed it to resonate and take form inside me. Just as it spread in the hearts and voices of the villagers over the course of the past few centuries. These songs preserve the past as an imprint of the spiritual world, feelings, and experiences of the people of the village, and I believe that through this record they can continue to convey the truths that time has made eternally valid.” In addition to singing with the Zűrös Band and Pravo, among other groups, Branka also performs concerts with the Boban Marković Orkestar. Awaiting us at this concert too are musical freedom and a sense of limitlessness.

A Feledi Project két kortárs zeneszerző, Szentpáli Roland és Orbán György kompozíciói által inspirált táncdarabokat mutatott be a Liszt Ünnepen. A Kozmikus konfliktus koreográfiája Szentpáli 2020-ban, a Müpa Zeneműpályázatán díjazott A szél és a nap című munkájára épül. A balett Aiszóposz (Ezópusz) görög meseköltő történetét dolgozza fel, melyben a nap bebizonyítja az északi szélnek, hogy a rábeszélés hatásosabb, mint az erőszakos kényszerítés. A táncest második részében a Müpa évadának kiemelt zeneszerzője, Orbán György misekompozíciójára, valamint kórusműveire készült koreográfiák a spiritualitás, a lélek világába vezetnek. A kiénekelt szavak és a mozdulatok együttesében a természet végtelenségére, kétségbeeséseinkre, örömeinkre, szomorúságainkra ismerhetünk rá, ugyanakkor Orbán György zenéje mindezeket játékosan, sok bájjal és varázslattal szólaltatja meg.

Feledi Project presented dance productions at the Liszt Fest that were inspired by the music of two contemporary composers, Roland Szentpáli and György Orbán. The choreography of Cosmic Conflict is based on Szentpáli’s The Wind and the Sun, an award-winner of Müpa Budapest’s 2020 Composition Competition. The ballet is based on the story of the Greek fabulist Aesop, in which the Sun proves to the North Wind that persuasion is more effective than coercion. In the second part of the evening, choreographies to a mass and choral works by György Orbán, Müpa Budapest’s featured composer of the season, will lead the viewer into the world of spirituality and the soul. The combination of sung words and movements brings in mind the endlessness of nature, our despairs, joys and sorrows, while all this is given a voice by György Orbán’s music with playfulness and plenty of charm and magic.

At only in her mid-thirties, Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen has conquered the world of opera, taking on iconic female roles from Ariadne to the Marschallin, and Leonora in Fidelio. This time, she is preparing to add another notable Leonora to her repertoire, promising a momentous occasion in operatic history. As Don Alvaro, the American tenor Brian Jagde, who has been regularly performing at the Metropolitan since 2014, takes the stage.

We have two relevant and memorable fundamental experiences from the Metropolitan: The 1983 video recording of „The Power of Fate” featuring Leontyne Price’s ethereal and pure Leonora, and a 1996 television broadcast with Plácido Domingo in the role of the persecuted Alvaro. Now, it’s time for us to witness the 21st-century production of La Forza del Destino, re-imagined with a modern-day setting by acclaimed director Mariusz Treliński. At only in her mid-thirties, Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen has conquered the world of opera, taking on iconic female roles from Ariadne to the Marschallin, and Leonora in Fidelio. This time, she is preparing to add another notable Leonora to her repertoire, promising a momentous occasion in operatic history. As Don Alvaro, the American tenor Brian Jagde, who has been regularly performing at the Metropolitan since 2014, takes the stage.

Bach: Máté-passió

A magyar zenehallgatókra 2024 nagypéntekén ritka húsvéti ajándék vár: a nemzetközi historikus előadópraxis legkiválóbbjai közül jönnek el néhányan a Müpába, hogy megszólaltassák a zenetörténet egyik legjelentősebb egyházzenei alkotását, Bach Máté-passióját. A Freiburgi Barokk Zenekart Francesco Corti vezényli, a szólistagárdában pedig a páratlan Philippe Jarousskyt is ott találjuk: az ő hangján hallhatja a közönség ezen az estén a felejthetetlen Erbarme dich áriát.

Négy év híján háromszáz esztendeje, 1727-ben komponálta Bach a Máté-passiót Christian Friedrich Henrici – írói nevén Picander – librettójára, amely Máté evangéliumán alapul. A művet feltehetőleg még ugyanazon év nagypéntekén, április 11-én mutatták be a lipcsei Thomaskirche falai között. Francesco Corti csembaló-, orgonaművész és karmester, számos világhírű régizenei együttes tagja, aki rendszeresen vezényli a legkiválóbb historikus zenekarokat, köztük az Il Pomo d’Orót, amelynek 2018 óta első vendégkarmestere. A Freiburgi Barokk Zenekart 1987-ben alapították Freiburg im Breisgauban. Az együttes idővel a korhű előadói gyakorlat egyik legnagyobb presztízsű képviselője lett, olyan vendégkarmesterekkel, mint Ivor Bolton, René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe, Pablo Heras-Casado vagy Trevor Pinnock. A Máté-passió előadásának kórusa, a Zürcher Sing-Akademie (a Schweizer Kammerchor utóda) nagy kultúrájú és széles repertoárral rendelkező, harminckét tagú svájci énekkar. A szólistagárda világklasszis énekesekből áll, akik közül ki kell emelnünk az evangélista szólamát megformáló német tenor, Maximilian Schmitt, valamint a páratlan virtuozitású és rendkívüli szuggesztivitású francia kontratenor, Philippe Jaroussky nevét.

Bach: St Matthew Passion

Awaiting Hungarian music listeners on Good Friday 2024 is a rare Easter gift, when some of the finest performers of historically informed music in the world come to Müpa Budapest to present one of the most significant works of church music in the historically informed performance: Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion. With Francesco Corti conducting the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the incomparable Philippe Jaroussky among the soloists, the audience will get to hear the latter sing the unforgettable aria Erbarme dich on this evening.

Four years from now will mark the tricentenary of the year 1727, when Bach composed the Matthew Passion to the libretto Christian Friedrich Henrici – known by the pen name Picander – wrote based on the Gospel of Matthew. The work was presumably first performed on Good Friday of that year, which fell on 11 April, at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Harpsichordist, organist and conductor Francesco Corti is a member of numerous world-famous early music ensembles and regularly conducts the top historically informed orchestras, including Il Pomo d’Oro, where he has served as first guest conductor since 2018. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra was founded in 1987 in the city of Freiburg im Breisgau. Over time, the ensemble became one of the most prestigious representatives of period performance practice, playing under the batons of guest conductors like Ivor Bolton, René Jacobs, Philippe Herreweghe, Pablo Heras-Casado and Trevor Pinnock. The choir for this performance of the St Matthew Passion, the Zürcher Sing-Akademie (successor of the Schweizer Kammerchor), is a highly cultured 32-member Swiss choir with a broad repertoire. The cast of soloists consists of world-class singers. Deserving special note are the German tenor Maximilian Schmitt, who will portray the voice of the evangelist, and the French countertenor of unparalleled virtuosity and extraordinary evocativeness Philippe Jaroussky.

Egy igazán izgalmas főszereplői páros teszi különösen érdekessé Puccini keserédes és atipikus operájának New York-i előadását. Nicolas Joël 2008-ban bemutatott, art déco ihletésű, elegáns produkciójában ugyanis most a mindig felvillanyozó amerikai szoprán, Angel Blue és honfitársa, a Metben e szereplésével debütáló Jonathan Tetelman egymásra találásának és bús elválásának lehetünk szem- és fültanúi. A fecske zenéjének felszárnyalásáért pedig a biztos stílusérzékű Speranza Scappucci szavatol.

„Könnyű, érzelmes, olykor komédiába hajló opera – de kellemes, tiszta, könnyen énekelhető a maga keringőzenéjével, lendületes és magával ragadó dallamaival… amolyan válaszféle a mai kor visszataszító zenéjére.” Komponálás közben így jellemezte kalandos sorsú, eredetileg Bécsnek szánt, ám végül Monte Carlóban bemutatott operáját Puccini, s alighanem maga is tisztában lehetett azzal, hogy a könnyed érzelmesség operaszínpadi megteremtése a gyakorlatban éppenséggel nehéz feladatot fog jelenteni A fecske előadói számára. Ezért is nagy szerencse, hogy Magda és Ruggero Párizsban lángra kapó, majd a francia Riviérán elhamvadó szerelme, ez a tragédiamentes Traviata-történet ezúttal Angel Blue és Jonathan Tetelman vonzó és illúziókeltő párosával kerül elénk. A csodás szoprán több New York-i közvetítésből ismerős lehet már számunkra, s akár első nagy sikerénél is jelen lehettünk, hiszen 2009-ben Budapesten nyert második helyezést Domingo Operalia-versenyén. Tetelmant pedig a Müpa közönsége előbb ismerhette meg, mint a Met publikuma: 2021-ben, amikor Elīna Garanča koncertjén mindenkit lenyűgözött sötét árnyalatú, hódító tenorjával.

A 2023/24-es évadtól kizárólag magyar nyelven feliratozzuk az eredeti nyelven elhangzó operákat.

A truly exciting leading duo makes Puccini’s bittersweet and atypical opera even more interesting in its New York performance. In Nicolas Joël’s elegant art deco-inspired production from 2008, we will witness the meeting and sad farewell of the characters portrayed by the always thrilling American soprano Angel Blue and her compatriot Jonathan Tetelman, who will make his debut in this role at the Met. The reliable sense of style of Speranza Scappucci will ensure a soaring performance of the opera’s music.

„A light and emotional opera, sometimes leaning towards comedy – but pleasant, clean, and easy-to-sing with its waltz music and its energetic and captivating melodies… a kind of response to the repulsive music of our times.” These were the words of Puccini when composing his opera, which had been originally intended for Vienna but ultimately premiered in Monte Carlo. And he was most likely aware that creating a light sentimental mood on the opera stage would indeed be a difficult task in practice. That is why we are lucky that the story of Magda and Ruggero’s love, which catches fire in Paris and fades away on the French Riviera — a kind of Traviata story without a tragedy, is presented with the appealing and alluring duo of Angel Blue and Jonathan Tetelman. The magnificent soprano may be familiar to viewers from several New York broadcasts, and some of us may have even witnessed her first major success, as she won second place at Domingo’s Operalia competition in Budapest in 2009. And the audience of Müpa Budapest may have already known Tetelman before the Met audience did: in 2021, he impressed everyone with his dark-toned, conquering tenor at Elīna Garanča’s concert.
